My weekend got off to a good start with some garage sailing on Sat. This year was different for me, I had to close my showroom due to major road work, and no longer buy in volume to resell old junk I fix up. I was in mourning most of last garage sailing season and hardly went at all.
This year, I am learning to be pickier and buy just a few things for myself or some lightweight items for ebay. I heaved a few heavy sighs when I had to pass up bargains I normally would have been loading into my van. But I did enjoy the small purchases I made, and heck, it is stuff I get to keep! Which makes it even better. Plus, zipping in and out of tight spots in my cute little Scion is a lot easier than driving that big ole cargo van I had. And my unloading at the end of the day was simpler too!
Here is what I limited myself to:
- a rosy juice cup- 25 cents
- berry bowl with roses- 10 cents
- McCoy aqua flower pot- $4
- McCoy matte white vase- $8
- rusty iron gate-$4
- toys for sugar wings- $25
- 2 Victorian chairs to fix up for my breakfast nook- $50
In the past, I NEVER would have spent that much on stuff to keep. I feel like a princes with all these presents for myself!!
Here is where the rusty gate went, it matched one I already had, so I put them at the entry to the flower bed I am building. Its still in progress, but a lot was done on it Saturday. All the shrubs and trees are in place. Just need to spread mulch and add annuals for color.
I also planted a wisteria vine that will hopefully grow up the posts of my vegetable garden entrance. Every spring I plant something different there, every year they die. Next year, if this wisteria doesn’t make it, I might as well plant a $20 bill instead. I’m ready to give up!
I’ll post pictures later on when the flowers are all blooming, right now it all looks a bit sad. The metal rocker is meant to have a bucket of flowers in it, and there is nothing planted in the hanging baskets yet. I need something there that is drought tolerant, maybe lantana?
Speaking of buckets – don’t forget- every comment enters you in the May Bucket giveaway!
You got some great bargains! Good luck with the wisteria. Hopefully that will flourish. The gate looks great.

You found some lovely things Karla. Your McCoy pieces are nice finds. I just found a great big McCoy yelloware bowl the other day. I was thrilled.
I can’t wait to see your garden growing. I love your arbor and the rocking chair looks so nice next to it like that. It reminds me of an old front porch. I wish you luck with the wisteria. I have a couple of vines growing in my backyard. Don’t be discouraged if it is slow to take off. Ones that size usually take about 3 years to become really established and then they grow amazingly fast. At least here in the Pacific NW.
Wonderful finds, and I really love the garden gate. The whole garden area is looking great!

I love yard sales and goodwill!!!!
I’ve gotten some of my best stuff at these two places!!!!
You found some great treasures! I love the white pottery and your garden gates! Please take more photos of your garden later in the season – it looks lovely!
wow, what great treasures you got, and great prices too! Can’t wait to see your garden when it’s all in bloom, bet it’s gorgeous!
Would love to see how the garden looks when it is finished
Your new garden looks like it is coming along nicely. I really like the rusty gates. Your vegetable garden entrance is very cute.
$4?! you got that gate for $4??? you lucky girl =) i WANT one of those but they are so darn pricey at the antique markets when i find them. maybe i’ll stumble upon one at a garage sale this summer… debbie
Karla, what wonderful treasures you found. I love how your gate looks in your new flower bed. Just wait until all the flowers start trying to grow close to it!
I love wisteria, I hope it works there, it would be amazing! Here’s wishing you many lovely days in your garden, under a rainbow of wisteria.
Beautiful! I love the rusty gate you bought. I saw almost and exact gate at the Flea market I went to on Sunday and they wanted $125 for it! So I would say you found a bargain!
As far as drought tolerant plants… I have had continued success with lavender. It seems to be very hardy even with a week or two without water. I love the rocker and the arbor. 🙂
Hi Karla! I love your garden! It looks so pretty! Why is it that the thrill of the hunt never goes away…even when you don’t need a thing! It is hard to be a woman! lol
By the way, I got my doodad..I just love it! Thank you so much! I have been meaning to email you about it. Heather
Your garden looks so clean and weedless! I just spent most of the afternoon digging dandelions and grass out of one of my flower beds. We’ve had so many years of drought in a row that the thing that grows best now is weeds. Argh!
Best wishes with the wisteria. I love wisteria but it can’t grow here.

Hi Karla
I am new to your blog, but I am just mesmerized by it…I too love antiques, garage sales, beautiful things, junkin’ and I even have a DORKIE! lol
I love the gate, it looks great…I’ll say a blessing for the wisteria, keep up the great blogging
I’m in Springfield, Missouri (not far from Branson)where are you???
Hugs

I love the entrance to your vegetable garden! Makes me want to redo mine. Have you tried morningglories or moonflowers? At least those are only seeds so you’re not investing a whole lot. You could stick some around the wisteria ( it’s a slow grower btw) just in case. Love what you did with the rusty iron gate. Your banner is gorgeous btw!
