After getting up at 6am (not typical for me at all) and driving over 2 hours, this is what we found. A ghost town!
Usually White Cloud is the last weekend of August and Sparks is Labor Day and some years they don't match up. So, this year, they changed the dates and aligned the shows BUT they didn't remember to change the info on the website!!!!!!
Next weekend is the Ginormous Nathan Camp-o-rama with 20 relatives coming to pitch tents in my yard, so no flea market for me this fall. I might have pitched a fit about missing it, but Beth took me shopping at The Rusty Chandelier
and that helped ease my disappointment. We ate a butter drenched lunch at Red Lobster and that wasn't so bad either.
Still, every once in while, we'd turn to each other and say, "I feel sad". We both love that flea market!
We also went downtown St. Joe, MO to Hatfield's, a junk shop/gun store. We didn't see many rifles that we couldn't live without, but I found a few bags of old cupcake toppers and a bagful of hats.
Cute, huh? I'll be using some in my own work, but there were so many, I listed quite a few in the Boutique.
I especially liked the chickens. I'm saving a couple to decorate cakes with Sugarwings, she needs to learn a bit more about farm animals. When she sang Old MacDonald to me tonight, she didn't mention cows, chickens, or pigs. Instead, her farm had unicorns and sharks.
Her Daddy bought her this vintage dotted Swiss nightgown for under a quarter. I couldn't decide if she looked like an angel, a Victorian doll baby, or Tammy Wynette in it.
While filling beakers with buttons yesterday, I also tossed some into old ink jars. The "labels" are made of a page cut out from a 1931 Needlecraft magazine (I thought that was fitting) and the ribbons are hand dyed silk. I decorated the jars with really nice mother-of-pearl buttons along with sparkles and flowers.
These are also for sale in my Boutique for $14 each.
Someday, I need to get some things added to my Etsy shop, I'm down to only FIVE items in there. What happened to my grandiose plans of keeping 50 things listed there? Between trips and company and everything else, that resolution kind of slipped by me.
Also, I am behind on my TV watching because of the trips. I'd much rather get caught up on Top Chef, Runway, Mad Men, and True Blood than listing things. I'd better get busy on that! So, I'm off to sit in front of the DVR for the evening. Its about as full as my google reader log.
Remember, you still have a few days to enter the August giveaway by leaving a comment.
Bummer! So sorry about the flea market! But that Sugarwings is definitely an angel!
Oh no! I would have been ticked if I’d driven that far and found it was the wrong date. I wonder how many other people that happened to?
Sugarwings looked angelic in that nighty! It’s a portrait-like pose, too.
Disappointing!!! I would have just sat down and cried!
Karla:
Yeah, I think, I would have been sad, all day too for missing the flea market……
But Oh, Red Lobster, can fix alot of disappointments, to be sure ~ YUM !
They really messed up, not updating their website. Caused alot of inconvenience.
The Ink Bottles are EXQUISITE !
So is that Fairy Grandbaby, Leandra.
An angel, to be sure ! You are BLESSED !
Your son, found a treasure, with that vintage nightgown, you must have taught him well, he has a good eye.
Looking forward to seeing your next incredible creation !
Love,
Deborah
Those ink bottles turned out good, Sugarwings and that dress and wings= yum!
Happy weekend.
Oh isn’t that annoying; that they ‘forgot’ to update their website? Luckily you were with Beth, we say: sharing a disappointment makes it half as bad. And I can imagine that eating at the Red Lobster helped too, we went there while we were in the States too and we loved it. We agreed already that your son was a keeper, but he defended this title well by buying that lovely gown. Sugarwings looks like an angle, definitely, though you cracked me up with your thoughts about Tammy Wynette! Have a great weekend!
I think I would have cried too!!! I’ve been to St Joe. My aunt lives about 50 miles north of there.
Sugarwings is such a beautiful and dreamy child. It cracked me up when you said Tammy Wynette. It does remind me of a “granny dress” I had in the late 60s.
Blessings,
Christine
Karla, I can’t tell you how much I have been enjoying your blog, and I have you to thank for introducing me to Beth, who has been hugely entertaining too. Except she doesn’t have Sugarwings! What a lovely little girl. Thanks for sharing!
Mitzi
Look at all those cupcake toppers.. sweet!
And little miss sugarwings definitely looks like an angel in that nightgown! great picture of her.
have a fun weekend!

Good Morning Sweet Karla! Photo of SugarWings is too pretty! And since Tammy Wynette is probably an angel now (?), I figure you got 2 out of 3! I haven’t seen Project Runway at all, and don’t watch Top Chef, But TrueBlood is not to be missed! I can’t wait to see how it is all going to work out, and since I read the books it is especially curious as they use some things and not others. But as you haven’t seen it, I won’t give anything away! Last, and certainly Least in this case,MadMen’s new season is a total yawn. I was a rabid fan and now plan to watch 1-2 more episodes, if it doesn’t improve, I’m done….Your Friend, Bobbi
‘Love the roosters and the ink jars! Now, I wouldn’t go tallying all the to do’s on top of grieving missing the flea market! That’s just too depressing! Sugarwings looks precious.
Hi Karla! Iam so sorry you drove all that way only to find a ghost town 🙁 How disappointing!! But, you made lemonade out of lemons!! You found some wonderful things!! I always love cupcake toppers 🙂 they are so cute! Sugarwings looks just beautiful in her nightgown! Your son must take after you 🙂 I have both Project Runway’s on TiVo but still havent watched them yet, lol! Hopefully I can find some time tomorrow to sit down and watch them 🙂
Love ya,
Amy

Oh so sweet … sugarwings AND the little duckies too. And that ink bottle is delish. Don’t you just love working with old book pages? {one of my favorite things to play with here and searching for old books is just as fun as using the pages in a new creative way}. I am totally crossing my fingers here – would love to have one of your charms!
Angel – definitely! How does SugarWings like preschool?
Sorry you missed the flea market, especially after that long drive.
Have a wonderful Camp-O-Ree!!

Hi Karla, wanted to pick your brain…just bought a black half torso today for $4.99 and was wondering when you covered your dress form with the old brocade- what did you use to ‘glue’ it on? Happy happies.

Sugarwings is definitely an angel! And what cute button beakers and jars you put together! You could make beauty out of about anything, methinks! Hugs, Cathy
Tammy Wynette??? hahahahahahahahha!! That was goooood! No she does NOT look like Tammy..hee-hee…. And I love the Old McDonald had a shark, song. That would’ve made the Ole McD place a tourist attraction for sure.

Too bad about the market Karla. My friends and I missed an Artist’s festival a few months back because of mixed up dates:(
Have fun with your tv watching:) True Blood is really edgy this season. Just warning you! I have had my “yuck” face on a few times:) Off to the boutique….
I have a story about those duckies on a stick… somehow a friend of mine got a bag full of those (we were 16) — and we went to a friend’s house and stuck the entire bag of ducks all along their split rail fence. About 200 ducks, all in a row. That was the degree of vandalism we did (but I prefer to call it “art vandalism”).
Now I just wish I had those ducks back!
This poster really is quite ducky!
You made me really Laugh Out Loud with the Tammy Wynette comment :)!!! Of course Sugarwings looks like an angel! Sorry about the Flea, hopefully the campout fun you enjoy with your family will more than make up for it!
Ha ha ha, the nightgown is a little “tammy wynettish” but sugar wings is so cute in it!! I love the ink bottles with buttons. You have been a very busy bee I think!
xoxo, Tiffany
Your grandaughter is the most gorgeous child and the pic in the nightie is a keeper. All of her are keepers.
That was a shame about the flea market. I can just imagine how disappointed you must have been.
We have the Kane County flea market here in western suburbs of chicago. It is the first Sat. & sun. of the month. It is labor day weekend and I am going to go. First time this summer.
Have a great time at your family re-union.
Hugs

Hi Karla,
Definitely Tammy Wynette but she is an angel. I enjoy your pictures so much. Your blog is just wonderful. The little ink jars are so cute and lovely!
