Gifts of Affection and the March Giveaway

Brunch 029

Now, Beth might have just happened to include this sentimental bit of ephemera in with the gift pack she brought me, but in my mind, she added it with true affection!  I know I just love her to pieces.

Brunch 044

With affectionate thougths of my own, I'm offering this necklace as my prize for the March Giveaway.

Brunch 047

This is the one I chose, because it is filled with rosebud and posy charms and seems to be just right for welcoming Springtime!

All you need to do is leave a comment to enter.  As always, all comments, all month count.

Brunch 026

Beth came over yesterday to finish up our sewing projects started last week, and as much as we both dislike sewing, sometimes you just gotta do it.  Unless you have unlimited funds and can have hire a seamstress, of course. Which we don't.

Brunch 033

And she showed up with gifts!! Well, she always does. Beth is a hunter/gatherer and is always on the prowl for goods for resale. While she is out, she picks up tid bits she knows I'd like too and since she knows me so well, they are always perfect!

Brunch 030

Great stuff, huh?

Brunch 071

But we didn't spend the whole day opening gifts and eating scones, we got some work accomplished too. The tablecloths are  DONE. whew. And for some silly reason, who knows why (since neither of us enjoy sewing), we both started making bags from some vintage scrappy stuff we had around.  Hers is from a quilt and mine is old curtains and doilies.

The bag I made is far from perfect, but looks OK as long as you don't examine any stitches or look too closely. I made up the pattern as I went along, to fit the doily I wanted to use.  I think the bag would be better with a bit more embellishing, but I quit. While Beth was here, it was going OK, because we were at that slap happy stage, the one where no matter what you say or do, it makes you have a giggle fit.  None of it would be in the least bit funny if I tried to tell you today what we were saying, but in the moment, we were hilarious to each other.

Brunch 041

The tablecloth I'm using on my studio table now is a gift from Beth too. She brought it to cut up and I said, NO WAY, its too nice.  So she gave it to me! Apart from it being really pretty, I love it because my great grandma made one very similar that I don't like to use, because my family is a bunch of pigs I don't want to ruin it.  I call this one my "stunt double" table cloth, I can use it and be reminded of the one I have from my great grandma.

Brunch 038

Some of you were asking about this bench I have made new pillow shams for.  It was a Victorian heard board that I got at a garage sale, in bad shape. Sugarwing's Daddy is an accomplished carpenter and he made the headboard into a bench, and I painted the flowers on it.

Today, while avoiding putting away all the sewing paraphernalia, I cleaned up my Boutique a bit and deleted some SOLD items, added a few new ones.

As tempting as it is to hang out at the computer and list more things, I need to get back to work. That sewing machine and all the mess that accompanies it needs to be stashed away, hopefully I won't be getting it out again for a long, long time!

  1. I think I would spend less time over here if I told you what I don’t like, hehehe, I love everything again! That necklace, mmmm I have to give more comments, would you mind if I commented every post a few times? (only kidding). Could we have a close up of the table covers you and Beth made, now that they are finished or don’t you want to spoil the surprise for the visitors? I love your post as always Karla, it is great to read about friendship! You never envie each other and always have fun, great to read!

  2. I love how you post all the wonderful little (well and I guess big) things on your blog. I love it when you have a new update because I know it will be something I love.
The neclace is beautiful and your right, it reminds me of spring. I especially like the purse you made. I have and old pillow case that my Grandma made. I think I’ll make a bag with it.

  3. Beautiful bag, beautiful bench, beautiful
necklace and I see beautiful Twinkle too!
    I miss her pictures!!
Loved the bakery that you went to.!!!!
Gorgeous and yummy pastries. I wish we
had such a lovely bakery as that in our
area. I hope you are doing well.
Thinking of you and Miss Sugarwings.

  4. I love that bag! What a great piece of inspiration you’ve given me, and I just so happen to have a drawer full of “cutters.” Thanks for sharing that – and happily, I love to sew!

  5. Karla the necklace is stunning. The gifts that Beth brought for you are really sweet. Having a daughter named Beth I know that are sweet loving girls. If you get a chance I just posted a swap that I was in on my blog. It includes some of the wallpaper etc I bought in your boutique. Next up is to make myself a journal using all the blue goodies I bought. I love reading your blog, thanks for sharing.

  6. Karla, I love that you and Beth are such good friends – actually I’m jealous, lol. I want a friend who likes what I like and to create with. What a blessing for you both.

  7. Karla, sounds like you and Beth have a lot of fun together, I have to say I was a bit jealous, wish I had a friend close by that loved the same things I do.
    Hugs, Diane

  8. Well you may not like to sew but you sure do make pretty things when you do!
Your giveaway necklace is beautiful too!
I love to come to your blog and daydream as I look at all the pretty things you show us.
How is mamma doing. Is she used to her little girls being gone now?
    Hugs,
    Joanne

  9. Aw, I love your bag.
The necklace looks like Sarah Coventry. I remember those jewelry parties my mom had … I think the ladies had them to drink martinis and giggle together.
BTW, Karla, I have some Beatrice Potter wallpaper sample squares. Is that too juvenile for your collection?

  10. I also love the bag you made! And without a pattern? I’m impressed! Sounds like you had a great day filled with laughter and sharing with a great friend!

  11. Oh, I just love the new necklace! I would love to win! Your bag is adorable, what a great idea. You are putting me in the mood to sew and boy do I have a lot of projects!

  12. Wow, you lucky thing! To have a friend bring you all those goodies! The necklace is beautiful, and I think it would look great with my new, shorter haircut! {hint, hint}! Becky G.

  13. Karla,
Sounds like you and Beth had a great day, productive and fun, too! The necklace is so cute and I love your bag! Isn’t it fun to just improvise and come up with something so great!I rarely use a pattern, sometimes it works but a few times, no so much. but that’s the challenge! I see Sparkle in the background, I just love fluffy puppies! I have 2 schnauzers, one will be 16 on Friday.
Look forward to your next post, I’m going to hop over to Beth’s now to see what she’s got going on.TTFN

That bag turned out REALLY cute-thats a perfect way to use scraps- too bad we hate sewing so much – we could make a ton of bags.
