Guests coming and no place to put them admist the junk, so I go and buy more junk

Garage_sailing_july_6_001 I should be getting ready for company.  I have half of a family reunion at my house this weekend, then we are all car pooling to Lake Okaboji, Iowa for the rest of the get together.

Garage_sailing_july_6_008 Instead, I go garage sailing.  And found a sweet ballerina doll for Sugarwing’s room.  I added butterfly wings to her, so she’d be a fairy ballerina.Garage_sailing_july_6_006

Of course, I aways have a stash of butterfly wings for these emergencies.  I buy them by the cartload when they go on clearance at Michaels.  Usually they can be found for a quarter at the end of the season.  And you never know when you will need a set of wings in a hurry!Garage_sailing_july_6_010

At another sale, a print shop was closing and I got 5 cases of manila and white mailing envelopes in 4 sizes, 2 cases of white and cream, blank note cards (the kind you send in an wedding invitation for RSVPing), and 3 cases of giant shipping tags!! For how much? TWELVE DOLLARS!!!

Now, am I crazy to think I will need this many envelopes for shipping purchases on Etsy and Ebay, or am I just being realistic, knowing that I am a swapaholic now and will be using lots of mailers????  I’ll also include some of those shipping tags in my give away this month. And probably every month for the rest of my life. Garage_sailing_july_6_011_2

Even twinkle can’t figure out what I am doing with a car load of old windows.  Well, sometimes I wonder too. But, I am planning on painting these up for signs, they have a pretty shape and were only a couple dollars for the stack.Garage_sailing_july_6_012_2 Garage_sailing_july_6_013

This is my $1 table. It had bad veneer, but I already picked it all off so that now there is a new surface to work with.  Some putty and paint? Or a mosaic? Or cover it in vintage papers?  After the legs are painted, this will be a beauty, no matter which way I decide to finish the top.

This white iron stand with glass shelves was extravagant- $5.

Some days you come here for eye candy, other days, you get dirty old tables, or a dumpster.  I almost hate to show you these next pictures.  Oh my.  But you’ll see why I say I SHOULD BE WORKING. Garage_sailing_july_6_014

I will have 9 people staying with us and about 25 or so people coming here for dinner,(and meals in between)from Saturday till Wednesday. Garage_sailing_july_6_015

And my art studio, which has seen some heavy duty work lately, plus is piled with garage sailing finds, needs to be transformed into a dining room by noon Saturday. Beds need to be made up and groceries need to be bought to feed us all.

So, I’m off to the grocery store.  (I think that there is a neighborhood garage sale by the store, I might have to stop)

  1. I love that 8-legged $1 table! I can’t wait to see what you do with it. Around here, the garage sales really slow down at the end of June, and I live in a pretty big suburb. I’d be in heaven where you live.

  2. I can’t wait to see the picture of how you magically transform your studio into an elegant dining room with tables set beautifully for 25 people! Have a great time this weekend & on your trip.

  3. That $1 table was a steal!! I’ve got a very similar one that my grandmother painted chippy white about 40+ years ago! She was WAY ahead of her time in SOOOO many ways. I love her & miss her dearly every day.
Boy, your page is loading fast now! Yippee!!

  5. Oooh gurl—you got it bad!! I can totally relate! who can resist those sales? Not me!
I have total faith in you, you will kick it into gear, tidy things up, and be ready for your guests. Don’t forget that your guest are actually coming to see YOU and they are NOT there to inspect your home! lol Have a great time!

  6. Awe, Karla, wish I could set up,cook and serve for you!!! It’d be a pleasure and fun too! Have fun!! P.S. That table would be fun pastel and with rose mosaic!!!!! Lori

  7. Are you showing “dirty pictures” little miss?! Heh heh, we might have to give you a triple X rating if you keep it up! Joking…
I love that you showed a real picture!!! We NEED to see messes every now and then so the rest of us who are naturally a mess don’t feel so inferior to all the beautiful people! Serious. I’m serious!
Old windows! Amazing finds you snatch up… I’m always envious of your outstanding finds!

  8. Karla,
You make me laugh! All I can say is have fun getting that room ready by this afternoon! Knowing you, you will pull it off no problem and of course hit the garage sale on the way to the store!
That table is a steal at a buck. Good thing you have a van – that’s what I need!
Keep us updated with pictures of the progress.

  9. Tee hee hee!!! You crack me up!!!
Funny is, I do the same thing. Just cannot resist a good trash to treasure bargain! DH just spent 2 whole weekends cleaning out the garage. To me that meant I could go to an auction and buy stuff cuz now there’s a place to put it until I could reorganize my studio space. LOL. *which I began today, by the way.)
And the day after I just HAD to spend 2 days salvaging woodwork from a house that was to be torn down. Not cuz I needed it all, but because I couldn’t bear to see it go down with the house. I’ll use it someday and be glad I sweated my tookus off in the 12 degree heat.
All the while, the basement is in dire need of sorting out and my studio, which is in the dining room looks like a bomb exploded. But, I NEEDED all the stuff I got. Right?
