I can’t say NO

Sweat_treats_and_roses_089 Can you restrain your self when you see  a bargain?? Apparently I can’t.

I’d never tried Bath and Body Works shampoo and conditioner before, but it was on clearance for $3 a bottle. I figured, for that price it would make my little Dorkies smell good if I didn’t like it for myself.

Well, I tried it and decided it was the best shampoo I’d ever tried! My hair felt so soft and smelled so good.  I am not wasting this stuff on the dogs!

I went back and bought a couple more…. but I am not hoarding it- I am giving sets to all my friends. (This photo is after I have already packed up a couple sets for buddies. )Sweat_treats_and_roses_092

NOT HOARDING is my goal for this year. I have adored working on the Sweet Treats book covers and using my favorite things on them, no holding back and saving bits and pieces for "something better"!

Sweat_treats_and_roses_093

See, look at this rose!!  I have been hanging on to this waiting for a good excuse to use it. But today, I just plucked it out of the pile of flowers and glued it right down with no second thoughts.

And it made me smile!Sweat_treats_and_roses_094

This card was one of the first I made when Beth and I planned the swap.

It was a prototype, and we decided we needed heavier cardboard for the covers, this was too flimsy.

So, along with my "waste not want not" New Years resolution and my Not Hoarding resolution, I decided to add a bunch of stuff to it and make it into something else.

Sweat_treats_and_roses_099

Same with this cover, it wasn’t heavy enough for a book.  So, I foofed and painted and added goodies to it.Sweat_treats_and_roses_100

Both of these are available in my Etsy Shop.  I have been listing some things today and hope to add more tomorrow., unless of course I get sidetracked, which happens around here a lot.

Yesterday I got NOTHING done at all.

I started the day with great intentions. Jag_014

It is snowy and cold, and I planned to stay in and work all day.  I have 8 more book covers to make and a few more of my own recipe pages to finish gluing on.

(this photo is of my art studio, garage, and my husband’s office, the main part of the old house is hidden by the trees. The house is L shaped. Its an oddly built home)Sweat_treats_and_roses_106

Ryan had my wheelbarrow full of firewood, and like I said, I had plenty of good intentions to hunker down for the day, keep warm and keep working.

Then, my friend, Jen called and invited me to coffee. Well, that sounded like fun. (I took her some shampoo)

Lee_lee_contest_019 Then my son called and he and Sugarwings wanted to go out to lunch. How could I turn down dining with a fairy baby????

Well, after that, I came home to work, and of course, the phone rang. Sharon was asking if I’d meet her at the gym.  Well, I’d gone out for breakfast and lunch, I thought maybe I could use some treadmill time.

Birthday_party_031 I thought I was done gallivanting for the day, but the phone rang again.

Angie called and wanted to go out for a glass of wine at the Eldridge, a  beautiful Civil War era hotel, downtown Lawrence.

We have a great time together and laugh our selves silly, so I had to go!! ( I took her some shampoo too)

She is ready to start dating, and somehow, I doubt she’ll have trouble finding a guy- look at her! I need to hang out with her now while I can, as soon as men in this town hear she is ready to date, she will never have time to see me.

If the men in my family are any example, guys get a little goofy and dreamy when she walks in a room.

My husband and sons both sigh after saying her name and talk about her all evening after she has been to visit us. (I wish I had a better photo to show you) Plus she is so sweet and kind hearted, she doesn’t realize she is beautiful.

Sweettreats So, not one bit of work got done yesterday.  I am trying to make up for it today, Sunday is the 20th, the deadline for our swap cards to be in. I need to be ready to put these covers on and get the books into the mail. I hope it works out, the deadline is a Sunday and then Monday is MLK Day and no mail. Looks like Tuesday at the earliest is when we can put our books together.  But we should wait till the afternoon mail on Tuesday…. well, maybe I do have a few more days to get my covers done!

Just in case, I am NOT answering the phone today. I am staying put at my desk!Sweat_treats_and_roses_087

The recipe packs are rolling in, it has been exciting. Most go to Beth’s house, but a couple are coming here. This one is from the other Karla, sugarbear.  Such pretty wrappings, it was like a box full of sherbet.

And look what she sent along, a pink puppy and a fairy doll for my Sugarwings!!! There is a surprise for Beth and I in there too, but I am waiting for her so we can open them together.

(isn’t that rose tag yummy?? Or as Sugarwings says instead, Nummy)Fgm_recipe2

Did I show you the back of Sissy’s recipe yet? A ballerina rose!

  1. I LOVE that shampoo. They discontinued the one I used to use and I went around buying it by the case! I’m so happy everything made it to you. I always get nervous that things will get lost in the great abyss of the mail system!

  2. Beautiful picture of your cottage with the untouched white snow!
also love the organza dress on sugarwings!
And your ‘almost’ covers are gorgeous, too!

  3. My daughter and I buy a lot from Bath and Body works. We like the hand soaps, air freshener, shampoos, lotions, and so on!
As always, your art is so pretty and to be invited out for so many things sounds wonderful.
Take care of that fairy grandbaby, she’s a sweety.

  4. I love Bath & Body Works shampoo. I stocked up, too. I also got lots of $1 bar soap, lotion, and 7 bottles of bubble bath. Their 75% off clearance was really good. I don’t think I could give my bargains away.

  5. I finally got mine in the mail and tell Beth I’m sorry I didn’t mail it to her…only because your address was easy to get to and I was going to have to knock someone off the computer to find hers.
Tell Ryan to ask that girl out fast!!!!
That shampoo ministry you have is wonderful LOL.

  6. Wow you had a super busy day. Sounds like a good one though!
I might have to run out and get some of that shampoo, I have stopped and looked before but never wanted to pay full price.
Your book covers are simply fabulous, cant wait to see everyones once they are done…fun fun .
    have a wonderful weekend 🙂

  7. Your collages are so pretty! I love that little pleated ruffle on the bottom.
I’ve been saving my “stuff” until I feel like my work is worthy of it, but my friend Lissa has reminded me lately, “That you haven’t saved it, until you use it.” I’m going to try harder to remember that.
Miss Sugarwings is looking particularly charming today!

  8. I wish everyone that came for coffe at my place came bearing such a nice happy!
I love your site! The roses are so sweet and home-y and I just adore pink rosebuds. I think it started when I used to admire my great-grandmother’s china that had pink rosebuds in the center of the dinner plates. I just thought they were so beautiful…like your site! I’ll be back!

  9. Karla, i don’t even know where to start…i am just in love with your “vintage roses” piece, it is truly gorgeous, everything about it just melts me…your little sweetie looks adorable just like always…your girlfriend is beautiful indeed!!! and the ballerina rose??? are you kidding me, i’m swooning all over the place…and i SO wish i were in your recipe exchange, maybe if you ever do this again, i will have a printer that WORKS…

  10. Why do your days seem to be twice as long as mine? I couldn’t possibly squeeze all those social engagements into one day. LOL
The snow picture is especially beautiful. I’m going to start planting some cold weather flowers, soon. Living in SoCal, I forget there are areas where there is REAL Winter weather.
However since, I live in the high desert it’s colder, here. It’s been in the 30’s at night and probably 50’s during the day.

Your friend is very pretty. I love her hair. She looks like she is already using your shampoo. I’ll have to go look for some. That is a really good price.

  13. I love B&BW stuff…Christmas 2006 they had a line of pomegrante products. It was the best! They didn’t do it this year and I was SOOO bummed so it’s good that you picked up all that you could of the stuff you liked!
And good for you for not hoarding your supplies! I’m terrible it that. I’ll often buy stuff knowing full well all I’m ever gonna do with it is just gaze at it. 🙂

  14. Karla, I love the way your days take unexpected turns and that you’re o.k. with that. I love it when I call a friend at the last minute for lunch and she’s up for it!
Great shampoo find! HOw kind of you to share. 🙂

  17. I think I would have bought it just for the pretty labels. I did laugh (kindly) at the thought of you taking some everywhere you go:) Spreading the love or in your case the shampoo. You are very strong and good using your precious supplies instead of hoarding:) Rachael

  18. I’ve got your page bookmarked and look forward to checking everyday to see what you are up to! Beautiful creations!

  19. Hi Karla!
I enjoyed your post very much especially the shampoo saga!
Haha, I was planning to keep my wallet shut when seeing bargains in 2008 too.
Today I bought about 12 packages with 5 kinds of ribbons for 60 cents each BUT gave my friend 6!! I didn’t feel guilty at all.
Keep those wonderful posts coming, love, LiLi

  20. Karla , oh girl , didn’t get anything done– what a wonderful person you are —
played with a darling fairy , and son to boot . Gave delight and made memories also with two friends — gave laughter (can we say shampoo ) to all your blog attenders . showed us your style and your heart — ah girl you accomplished a lot — and all right from your heart –
‘ wow I love this blog world . and thank you for sharing your day and your open heart . Kathy – Ga .

    hugz twin

  22. Love, Love the vintage rose piece!!! I truly love everything you do…think maybe because I love roses and love paintng them and yours are so soft and painterly! Whew, that last sentence could be a tongue twister! Going to go get some of that shampoo, if it makes my hair smell good, then the big dogs will get a bath with it too! Dogs get awful smelly in the winter with out some sort of scented shampoo. -Sandra

  23. Very funny story about the shampoo. Glad to hear I am not the only lady out there who has a problem with buying only ONE! I did the same when I came across some rose linen water. I LOVE IT! For awhile, no one in my family was exempt from rose smelling clothes. My husband’s slacks never smelled better! Of course, he went to work wearing the slacks wondering all day long, “What is that smell?”

  24. Well I am still laughing from your shampoo comments…very funny. And how nice you were invited out for so many different “events!” I would have done the same thing.
Best wishes to your gal pal…you are right, she shouldn’t have any trouble at all! Has she tried online dating? That is where I met my dear hubby.
    ~ Jillian

  25. Clicked on your name or on Heather Bullard’s blog by way of Rebecca Sower’s blog and think I will be back. The stems look like two bodies dancing the tango and the leaves like arms -COOL.

  26. Great post, full of interesting tid-bits. Where to start? So, I do am a bit of a Bath & Body junkie, I hoard the shower gel, but don’t tell anyone.
The work you show is lovely, I love your resolution, too. No hoarding. I need to make that a big and lovely sign to hang in the studio so I don’t save those lovely bits of fabric and paper for the “someday project” that never comes.

  27. I’m a bargain-driven person myself. I can’t pass one up either. Good job! I love the art on the covers. Gosh I wish I had gotten in on that swap! So lovely!

  28. Hi Karla,
I’ll just HAVE to get me a bottle of that wonderful shampoo, if there’s any left…LOL
I simply LOVE all of your artsy cretions. You have INSPIRED me to pull out some of my thousands of “stored away” treasures and see what I can create….
    Until Next Time….
    Stay Warm,
    Dianne

  31. I’m catching up on your blogs… I just have to say that you are one of those people who don’t know how beautiful YOU are!!! I’ve told my husband that before. So I guess people talk about you too 😉
After all that socializing, I wanted to call you up to meet me for lunch!!! And now I have to go shopping for some shampoo!
