More sludgy than juicy

Are any of you having a hard time getting back on track with normal every day life, now that Christmas has passed? I seem to be in limbo, and unmotivated to get anything accomplished. I guess now that all the hustle and bustle and rush to make the holiday happen is over, I don't quite know what to do with myself.

My creative juices are more like a sludge right now.  So, here are a few paintings I did for Christmas cards in years past.  My husband works for a golf company and he likes me to make up golf themed cards for him.

Thats not such a good photo of this drawing, but in my state of lethargy, I'm thinking "so what".  Hmm, you might wonder why I even bothered you all with a half assed post? I'm trying to get myself motivated to make something or DO something and my blog has always been good incentive to keep me moving.

After all the excitement, it isn't easy to rush back to work.  We just had way too much fun over Christmas!

Yes, the holiday was pretty exciting around here. Sugarwing's Mom, the Hippie Chick showed us her fire dancing.

After opening gifts and stuffing our selves with goodies on Christmas Day, we all went outside to watch the Hippie Chick light her hula hoop on fire and put on a show for us.

She's quite talented, and even though it is a bit scary for me to watch, the flames were really dramatic in the dark, icy night.

Tuesday I have a play date scheduled with Beth, to go junking, tomorrow I start work on my new web shop, then, there is New Years's parties, and puppies due to be born, so I guess a couple of days to meander around the computer, read books, and resettle into post-holiday life isn't so bad.  Is this what it feels like to relax!!??? Maybe that is what I am doing.    A couple of days of doing NOTHING, really isn't so bad, is it?

  1. The artwork on your cards is amazing. Hippi- Chick hula hooping with fire—Yikes that would make me nervous also.
Enjoy your time off—take a hot bath, sip some wine, eat some chocolate 🙂 you deserve it.

  2. Love the hand painted cards. This is my first visit to your blog. I enjoyed reading all of the post and viewing the photos.
    Happy New Year

  3. the cards are amazing Karla and I will treasure mine! I have felt in limbo too! I’m back to work tomorrow so maybe it will feel more normal. I think I’ve been in the same sweats for 3 days now! I cleaned off my entire work/art table and got so organized last week and now it’s way worse than it ever was before! I did find alot of hidden treasure though. I’ve been sewing on and off all day so I’ve created even new messes.
I also washed the car….barefooted…it was almost 60 degrees here today!

  4. Like Robin our temps were well into the 60’s, with the possibility of snow next weekend.
Love your cards, and I feel like you, the after the holidays let down.
I thought you may be posting puppy births.
My daughter and son-in-law are fire spinners, fire dancers, and fire-eaters/blowers.
I think my daughter has given up fire-blowing. It’s a long story better told in email… 🙂

  5. Hi Karla, I think it is the hardest think to relax without feeling guilty and without your mind going a thousand to one, of all the things you need to do but just can’t be bothered starting. I am in the same sludge and have just written a post requesting a little inspiration….it must be in the air!
Maybe that is what I need …fresh air!!
Have a truly lovely day, kiss noises Linda Lilly Cottage.

  6. I think it’s HARD to do nothing when you’re not used to that! I spent the day after Christmas reading my new book and watching DVDs – but one day was really enough. (Guess that’s it for another year!) I’m sure you’ll come up with plenty to do!

  7. Wow…that was a very different post, Karla. But I loved it.
Fire dancing. How cool is THAT.
Loved the cards from the past. My favorite is the house with the yorkie waiting on the porch. You do amaze us Karla.
Don’t forget to go by Walmart on your junking adventure. See if there is any Martha Glitter left.lol

  8. You are one talented woman! Those cards are beautiful. I plan on taking a painting class (one of these days) – it will be paint-by-number – ha ha.

  9. One more comment – I de-Christmased my house today. What a chore that was. Now I am totally depressed. I look forward to the 31st, but until then this is depressing.

  10. Karla, even a lady with all your talent and energy needs a few days of doing nothing -or -whatever you choose to do. You will be motivated when you need to be. The past Christmas cards were really cute too. Enjoy the rest of 2008.

  11. Karla, this is my secret to rejuvenating the creative juices….lock the studio. That’s right – lock it up for a few days or a week. Don’t think about creating and don’t touch all your pretties. This always works for me and usually I decide to have a week off but I guarantee you won’t even last that long and you will be itching to get back in there.
    Good luck sweetie.
    Hugs,

  12. It sounds to me that you’re not ready for Christmas to be over, so you’re hesitant to move forward. You’ll get your engine recharged before you know. Probably by tomorrow.
That fire dancing is amazing. Hope all is going well with hippie chick and dear son.

  13. …a friend of MY hippie daughter does the fire spinning…and it’s a genuinely unique artform….
    hugz and love
p.s. i saw “twinkle” and “sparkle’ gift tags at the store yesterday..and thought of your babies!!!

  14. I love seeing your paintings, you put so much detail into them, and of course, you are so very, very talented! I can’t imagine you doing nothing for long! I have always been amazed by your energy and gusto!

  15. Thanks for your post Karla. I too have been feeling blah, like “why can’t I get going on all these projects I know I want to do?” Maybe it’s something in the air! Nice to know I’m not the only one. Have fun on your playdate with Beth. My art buddy is busy til New Year’s and I miss hanging out with her.
ps I laughed at the term “hippie chick,” since in high school and college, that’s what I was. . . and maybe once a flower child, always a flower child!

  16. Great cards, Karla. And, the fire show must have been exciting.
Yes, I hear that relaxing is a good thing. I am going to try a bit of it this week, too. But, I do have some things I am determined to cross off of my to do list.

  17. Beautiful cards! You are so talented. Sometimes when I get in those “don’t know what to do with myself” stages, I find that doing nothing is great. When an idea finally hits me it’s wham back into creating. I come out better in the end. Does that make any sense? I think I am still delirious from all the “holiday excitement” if thats what it’s called 😉 Enjoy junking!

  18. Karla, I love your artwork ~ especially the first pic of your home ~ just beautiful!! Enjoy your rest period, sounds like things will soon be hectic again!!

  19. Nannie (the other grannie)

I was nervous about the first time I would see Cait fire-hoop, I am glad she surprised me with it so I couldn’t chicken out!
She is so amazingly talented when it comes to dance–not to mention being a super mom and making straight A’s in nursing school…we are so proud of her.
