New dogs, old dogs, the sheriff, and some fairies, its been a good day so far

Today, I made a get well card with a fairy portrait for a little girl who is having spinal surgery this week.  I wrapped up one of my Grumpy Fairy books as a gift for her too.  She's 10, but I think she still likes fairies. Heck, I'm almost 52, and I sure like them.

Here is your obligatory puppy pic for the day. Twinkle is still all snuggled up with her cuddlepups and they are getting fatter and starting to grow.

Their eyes aren't open yet and that worries Sugarwings. I caught her taking a blue marker, preparing to draw eyes on one of the pups to help them out.

Sparkle has been hanging out with me a bit more than usual since Twinkle has her paws full.  Normally, Sparkle spends her time on a pillow with Bookie, both are elderly. She is blind and mostly deaf, so isn't too adventurous, but this time of year makes her feel young again, and she's happy to be outdoors sniffing around while I do yard work.

Spring makes me feel younger too, until AFTER I'm done with the yard work. My aches and pains let me know that the youthful feeling was just an illusion. About now, I'm wishing I could crawl up on that pillow with the old dogs.

We've had some drama today.  We hired (and gave a down payment to) some tree trimmers.  Well, weeks later, no work was done.

They finally showed up last week, and trimmed this tree down to one limb. Trouble is, that is the limb that hangs precariously over our roof, the one branch we wanted gone before the next storm did it for us.

They have not been back, but the sheriff and the guy who owns the equipment they left here came to see us today.

It all ended OK (so far), with my husband (on the left) hiring the lift's owner to help him finish that branch the tree guys left.   My husband loves to play with his chain saw.  This is new though, he's never taken out a branch over our cottage, normally, he cuts firewood out in the Fairy Forest.  I'm terrified of the whole process, heights and chain saws both are big on my list of things to avoid at all costs.

But, I'm lucky they don't frighten him, this tree needs to be fixed and we are already out a few hundred bucks.  But a little fear wouldn't hurt him, he worries me up there. I over heard the lift operator call him a mad man.

I own a small hedge trimmer that is battery powered and can hack away at shrubs and small branches with that myself, but always feel like I am in danger while doing it.  There is no way I'd pick up a chain saw.   I've been known to cut through the cord of my trimmer more than once.  Imagine the damage I could do with a real weapon like a chain saw!

Around town, lilacs are blooming in a magnificent way.  This is the best year I can remember for them.  My own plants are bursting, for the first time in the 20 some years we have lived here.  I kind of thought our old bush was done for, but this year it surprised me.

Its been a productive day, I've wrapped packages of purchases from the Boutique, done a little fairy picture, some yard work, and dealt the sheriff.  Not only that, I got some new items listed in the shop too.

There are a few Peat Pot Fairies in there, as well as some kits to make your own.

Or you could just sign up as a follower on Google Friend Connect and be entered to win one...

Right now, I'm going to go out and make sure my husband and his chain saw are still doing well.  And the roof of my house.

If all is safe, I'm going to get a few more things listed, that is unless I've curled up on that pillow with the old dogs to recuperate from the yard work.

I'll leave you with some pictures of what's new.

  1. Oooh, that would scare me too !! My Hubby is sort of the Tim Taylor type. I asked him to recauk the tub the other day and he used a WHOLE tube. Guess you know what I will be doing this week, lol !! Scraping it all off ! 🙂 Your flowers are so pretty 🙂 And Twinks is such a doll with her babies. Hugs 🙂

  2. Oh Karla my hubby fell out of the tree with the chain saw in our old house. He scares the beeeeejebers out of me. He was up there with that saw making those terrible noises rummmmmmmmmmm rummmmmmmmmmmm rummmmmmmmmm & then quiet & I see the saw coming down & he was right behind it. He’s lucky he didn’t land on the saw & didn’t break his neck. CRAZY MAN! And he wants a saw mill…… over my dead body!
I would love to know the price on the doll arms & legs. LOVE THEM! Hugs

  3. Very beautiful pictures of the lilacs! My mom had/has one in her back yard (for many, many years – more than 25 I believe) and every now and then it will bloom. I think it’s hit or miss with those things!
Twinkles pups look too cute for words! And the other dog, Sparkle, is a cutie pie as well!! I just love the little dogs so much more than larger ones. I had a terrier mix as a kid. He was great fun!
    Thanks for sharing!!

  4. What is the deal with the chain saws? Jeff has plans to cut down or trim about half our trees and THEN get a wood chipper and turn all the stuff he cuts down into mulch. I don’t want to be home..

  5. those little discombobulated arms and legs really scare me…isn’t that strange? So does wielding a chain saw! I have one of those hedge trimmers too and I love it. I’ve never cut the cord though…sounds like it could be painful. Lovely lilacs…hmmmmm.

  6. This post was full of all kinds of fun pics and news! Twinks is adorable with the pups and Sparkle is such a sweetheart, too (can you tell I just love dogs…)It was fun to see your lovely artwork and hear the story of the tree…we have a big 40 footer that needs to come down, too…I hope my husband stays far, far away LOL!

  7. Karla, Karla, you live much too an exciting life..lilacs,artists to paint babies closed eyes.. runaway workers, chain saw managing husband and sweet little dogs…take a break and let’s see what tomorrow brings LOL

  8. Wow, beautiful puppies, lovely attentive Mama dog and lilacs…I love them! Chain saw n’ hubby that is scary!
You should of seen mine after Hurricane Isabelle…
Hope all is well, now! Cute peat pot! My husband recently took down a 90ft pine, near the house. I was horrified!
    Glad everyone is fine!

  9. I received my package today. It was so beautifully wrapped I didn’t want to open it 🙂 Thanks so much, I will assemble my little pot when I move to my new house this weekend. (That is when I get a chance) Give those puppies a gentle squeeze for me. Christy (dorascottage.blogspot.com)

  10. Oh, how scary.. I went up in a bucket truck once. Just once. I had a fit! My ex used to trim trees for a side job. My son was about ten, and he filmed the whole thing on our video recorder. How horrible. Your puppies are adorable.. and your peat pots too!

  11. Karla,
Your lilacs are lovely! I have a couple of Lilac bushes that rarely do well here in So Cal, but I actually have 6-8 blooms this year. I LOVE lilacs! I think it comes from my Mom’s roots in Kansas.
    XO

  12. oh your lilacs are gorgeous. They are a very favourite flower with me too, and we have a lilac in our back garden that does very well. However, much as I would love to I never have them as cut flowers in the house. My Mum’s fault. She’s always told me that they were unlucky to have inside.
I did a bit of research last year because I was so miffed about it, after all, seems to me they are related to the hyacinth so why all the bad luck? Turns out that in Victorian England they were used in funeral parlours or houses where someone had died, to help mask the stench of death. Nice!!!! Because of that they were associated with death. That’s no longer the case, but the ‘bad luck’ tag has stuck, and I have never known anyone to use them as cut flower. And try as I might, I can’t let myself bring them in , in case I tempt fate. My family has had more than enough bad luck with various family members. I have to make do with making arrangements with them around the garden. On the table and bench :O) Supersitions. Once they get into your head it’s hard to ignore them.
Sounds like there is a lot going on around your house at the moment. With puppies, and chain saws and little girls with blue pens!!! Had to laugh at the last one, sort of thing my tiny girl would do!
    Have a lovely Tuesday xx

  13. Well, the lilacs around here have leaf buds now…..
I always get so jealous of everyone showing all their flowering things before mine even get leaves!!!
I vote for going to curl up with the two old dogs……

  14. What IS with men and chainsaws? My husband gets his out and no standing piece of shrubbery OR trees are safe. Animals run for cover and the trees and bushes shudder. – Kathy

  15. Life sometimes brings surprises! Glad it worked out o.k. (so far). Your photos and art are both spectacular! I look forward to spend more time with you.
    Best,
    Bonnie

  16. Lilac’s bloom on new growth wood, so what you need to do this spring after all of the blooms are gone, is trim back your bushes. Then next spring, all of the new growth will result in massive blooms!!

  17. I can’t get over how much Twink seems to love those puppies! I’ve seen so many dogs get annoyed with their pups or just ‘put up with them’ at the most! She is such a wonderful mommy!

  18. Oh, boys with their toys. I mean, couldn’t they like something less frightening?
I was giggling over Sugarwings trying to draw eyes on them. When my daughter goes for a marker, I know it’s trouble. I follow her around suspiciously…
The puppies are cute as a bug.
Your new items are lovely. See, we girls like pretty, non dangerous items. Is that too much to ask?

  19. Janice Rehmeyer

Sounds like a Judge Judy case. And like you with the edge trimmers it seems like i try my very best not to cut the cord, which i have done many of times. No chain saw for me.
Karla! since you have two older yorkies, will you be keeping a puppy this time????

  20. Yikes — you’ve had a ton going on! Great photos, though — and those lilacs rock! Nice for Sparkle to have some “star time” while MamaTwinks rests!

  21. Oh Karla,
That is so scary about the limb. We had one fall in a storm and stop about a foot from our house. Must be that clean living around here…haha!
Thanks so much for visiting my blog. I always get so excited when one of you “honcho’s” visits my baby blog. I sure am having a lot of fun with it, though!!!
I better check out your store and see if anything is left!!!
    Hugs,
    Suz

  22. I hear you on cutting cords Karla. When I was first married and living in our first house, there was a a hedge that needed to be trimmed. My husband was deployed and so I fished around in the garage and found a hack saw and decided to tackle it with that. Sure enough about two minutes into the job I cut right through the cord. I couldn’t figure out why it stopped working for about ten minutes until I saw the cord cut in two. I have never lived that down – every time I get out a power tool, my husband teasingly reminds me of that time I cut through the cord.

  23. That comment about Sugarwings is so cute. It was lucky that you were there to stop her from taking matters into her own hands.
Was this an extra cold winter for you? That might explain the Lilacs.
    ~elaine~

  24. Oh Karla, how scarey for you. My ‘Tim the toolman’ had a really bad fall off a ladder at Easter and broke 3 vertabrae and 3 ribs. He’s confined to bed for 3 months recuperation and for the bones to knit. But he still thinks he’s bullet proof – I ask you.
The lilacs are fantastic you lucky people, we can’t grow them like that in New Zealand maybe its not cold enough. My daughter lives in France and she has several huge bushes in her garden – I can almost smell them from here, 12,000 miles away – I think thats wishful thinking!
I love everything you have on your blog and you’re on my daily visit list. Last weekend I started my own blog, but there’s not much to see yet – one day! Thank you for the peep into your world!

  25. I love the pink peat pot charlotte! I think it is my favorite!
The lilacs are beautiful, I don’t think they grow all that well in Calif. because I don’t see them here…Peonies either, what a bummer!
And men and their tools! At least he seems safe up in that picker thingie!
    Have a great wednesday! karen….

  26. Hm, I wonder what made your lilacs bloom this year? I am so with you on the chainsaw thing – I’m so blade phobic! And I had to laugh when you said you’d been through the cord with your hedge trimmer, because I have, too! And, once, the neighbor’s cable box wire! Don’t ask.

  27. Prayers that the little girl recovers okay.
The puppies are the definition of “Awwwww!” And your lilacs “Oooooh!”
Hope the pillow was big enough for you and the dorkies.
