No matter how much you spend on cupcake decor, if you can’t get the icing right, the cupcake still looks homemade

Cupcakes 001

Today is craft day, but with a twist, I am not cleaning up my studio and inviting friends over, we are using a rental studio in KC. ( I'll have details when I get back, I lost the blog address and am rushing right now).

But first, I wanted to take the time to thank you for your purchases and to remind you that the sale is still on at the Etsy shop .  Details are in the previous post, but I also want to remind you that you need to purchase the items from Etsy, go to the check out, but do NOT pay with check out. Email me and I will send you an invoice for half off whatever is left.

I'm fine with you just emailing me the info and I go to the shop and delete the items, but I doubt if Etsy would like it, and I might get booted from there, because they don't get their percentage that way.  I've done this for a few people, because it was quicker and easier than explaining and no problem to do, but I really don't want to make the big ole Etsy goliath mad at me.

Cupcakes 012

I've made up cup cakes to take today, because crafting in packs is hungry work. We all get nibbly while we are cutting and gluing.

And you know, I really, really, sincerely tried to make pretty cupcakes.  These are okay, but not what I wanted.  I saw some on Andrea's blog once that made me sigh they were so lovely.  So, when I spent a day with her, I asked her secret and she took me to her cupcake decor source, where I bought a big bagful of icing roses.

But, its not the same.  Oh, yes, they are the same roses.  They just don't look as good without her magic cupcake touch. She has that touch with everything. Heck, she could probably have a cupcake hanging out of her nose, and everyone would think it was the most beautiful cupcake they ever saw.  She's that good with making things pretty.

I even tried the edible Glitter that I was introduced to at Debbie's party.  The glitter and the roses look good, but with my sloppy icing job and skimpy crooked cupcakes, it just isn't the same.

Well, they might not look like they came from a classy bakery, but they are tasty.  Pillsbury strawberry cake mix and a can of cream cheese icing, yum!

See the stack of books?  I can't believe it, but I found more of these at a sale yesterday!  I listed a couple, the last ones went fast.  They are in the Boutique.  There are some sale prices here and there in the Boutique, but the Etsy sale is Etsy only.

These teensy framed prints were at the sale too, so I bought a bagful. This one is being added to theJULY GARAGE SALE GIVEAWAY PRIZE PACK, a couple others went into the Boutique, and I kept a few for myself to deconstruct and use in projects.

But what is the most special thing in the photo?? Ahh, aren't these just the best?? Aunt Caroline had her pink pearls sent to me.   Sorry for the bad picture, these deserve better than that.  But I need to throw some supplies and crap in a box and get my butt to craft day, gotta run! (that butt that is a bit bigger after making sure the cupcakes were tasty even though they only looked average)

  3. Oh Karla, you’re way too hard on yourself! They look lovely and delicious to me! If someone made me cupcakes for a craft class I’d put them in my will!

  6. I have the same problem with icing cupcakes. I solved it by piping icing on using a pastry bag and a large tip – looks professional everytime!

  10. I am so happy for you that you actually received Aunt Caroline’s pink pearls!!!!! She did promise them to you so it’s good that she let her other family memebers know. I’m sure they look lovely on you. Thank you soooooo much for the special crow you made for me. I love the pink “hat” that you let her have from the sweet little doll you bought in Mt. Dora.

  11. Karla , looks isn’t everything. I have seen some beautiful cupcakes that tasted really bad, so as long as yours taste good , WHO CARES what they look like. I actually think yours looked pretty darn good by the way.

  12. Hi Karla, I think your cupcakes are pretty. Nothing wrong with them..look so yummy. Lovely pearls. Isnt it so nice to recieve something special from our relatives. My brother just passed away and he took alot of his share when my parents died. So his kids are helping his mom get rid of stuff. So I wound up with my moms 1937 griffin spice jars and holder. Kind of shabby. But I love them. They were prized possesion of my moms. Well Ive posted again and pictures of Hattie jane. If you want to take a peek when you get time. Love your blog and Sugarwings. Sally

  13. Those cupcakes look fine & dandy to me! They’re pretty, but they have that ‘touch of love’ that you seem to refer to as ‘sloppy’.
I use a Dessert Decorator. (It just squeezes out the icing prettier than I can spread it – and I can put canned icing in it, not just homade.) Next time I get off my tookus and make some cuppy-cakes, I’ll post on my blog & send ya a link. I’m not guaranteeing hang-out-of-your-nose pretty, but I like the results.

  14. You are too funny!! ever heard of the saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder…a hungry one! Pretty is as pretty does if it doesn’t taste good it doesn’t matter how beautiful it is! We KNOW yours taste good since you did the taste test so just have fun and enjoy!!!!!!!!!!! wish I could be there to cut and paste with all of you. Hope you have a great day!

  17. The cupcakes looks pretty good to me!! But you did remind me of a funny story that I’d forgotten waaaaaay back in my Brownies days.
Now first of all, you have to know, that my mother was an immagrant of Dutch and German decent. We NEVER had “margarine” in our house, let alone shortening. It was unheard of. We either baked/cooked with butter or Vegatable oil.
That being said, to earn a merit badge in Brownies, we had a cake decorating session. Each girl went home with the recipe and came equipped with their own decorators icing for the badge project. My mother, of course used BUTTER in my icing mix, which tasted divine, but couldn’t even come close to doing “ribbons, roses and the likes.”
Funny though, I tasted the other icing as it was shared with me, my mom’s wasn’t as pretty, but it tasted SO much better!!!
I’ve often thought that most of the foods that we REALLY love to eat can be pretty messy!!!
    Still, your’s looked lovely!!

  18. I don’t think I’ve ever met a homemade cupcake that I didn’t like!
Of course I don’t think I’ve ever met a fancy bakery cupcake that I didn’t like either, but that is beside the point.
“Crafting in packs”….now that sounds interesting!

  19. I think the cupcakes look delicious! I’m in a cupcake mood — must make a ton for Rick’s birthday party. More manly cupcakes, I guess, but I’ll pretty ’em up!
The pearls are lovely, Karla. Such a beautiful treasure for you.

  20. Oh I misses so much. I won’t be able to comment on everything (thus lessening my chances of wining one of your sweet give-a-ways)but wow such fun I am having reading along and trying to catch up.

  21. You crack me up. Your cupakes are beautiful and so are all of your pictures!!! If you would like, I will hang one out of my nose and see how it looks then….I would do that for only you, Karla!
