Pansy Pendant Prize and getting my snorer-snipped

IMG_0655

Did I mention that I LOST the pendant that I told you was going to be the giveaway for April?  Well, maybe misplaced, not totally lost.  Its somewhere in my studio.  Who knows when it will turn up. So, I'm subbing this one.  In the Mid West, pansies are one of the first things you can plant, and I'm always excited when they start showing up in front of the grocery store and in the parking lots of hardware stores.

So, to replace the previous pendant, here is a pansy shard necklace to welcome spring. Its from a really nice English bone china bowl that I was sad to see break.

All comments all month are entered into the drawing for the pansy pendant.  All sign ups on Google Friend Connect are entered into the Peat Pot Pretty drawings (multiple pots are being given away).

Look at how big our cuddlepups are getting! Their eyes are not open yet, but we've hidden the markers for now. Sugarwings is still pretty worried that they can't see.  I guess I should hide her package of googly eyes and glue too.  We don't need the pups to turn into art projects.

These guys are getting big fast. Next week, they'll need a bigger box.  I'll have to dig out the puppy pond.  We use a kid's wading pool as a play pen when the pups are big enough to run around. Its easy to wipe out and keep cleaned up, and keeps the kids contained, yet gives them space to run and play.

We had a mini craft day yesterday, only Beth and Mary could come.  Beth had just returned from her Grandmother's funeral, so I picked some lilacs and made a little arrangement for her.  I rarely order flowers from a florist, I'd rather do something personal when someone passes.

IMG_0644

This was a simple arrangement.  I wrapped lilacs in a wet paper towel, then in plastic wrap, and next in ephemera.  To the ephemera, I glued an old button (Beth is a button person) and a small banner with her Grandma's name written in purple glitter ink.

Then, I dropped it into the jar onto some moss and added a glittered bird.

The jar is from a garage sale, I'd found two of them over the weekend for $4.50 each. She'll be able to empty the stuff out of it and use it for storage in her studio later on.

The pin that I clipped to the gross grain ribbon (taken from an old hat- when I take apart a hat, I use ALL the pieces!) is a pair of bird scissors! I'd found it in a jar of junk jewels and had been saving it for Beth, because I know she loves sewing supplies.  Too bad it was such a sad occasion for me to finally get to use it.

She can take it off the ribbon and wear it on a jacket if she'd like.

In case you were wondering, my husband lived through the tree trimming above the house.  You can see from this angle why I was worried about both him and the roof! And the air conditioning unit that sits right below the limb.

From this photo, I noticed that the storm window in the attic guest room is up.  I have to wonder if it was up all winter.  No one opens that window… Geez, no wonder we pay such huge propane bills.

This afternoon, I'm having a minor surgery.  My snoring has gotten so loud, no one in the house can sleep and I have decided to have something done about it.   From what I've been told, I'm louder than the chainsaw.

I'm crossing my fingers that it works! But I may be away from the computer for a few days, so please forgive me if I don't have a chance to respond to emails or comments.

I'll get all orders from the Boutique filled and mailed before I go in for the snipping.  Anything that is ordered after won't be mailed till Saturday or Monday depending on how big of a wimp I am.

  2. Hope your surgery goes well. My niece is an ENT doctor so I know all about that surgery. Fortunately, neither my husband or I snore. Well, if I do, I don’t hear it and he doesn’t complain! Those puppies are adorable! Our dalmatian is eleven but still a snuggler. He think he’s a tiny lap dog! Love your art!
    Best,
    Bonnie

I love the jar with the Lilacs for Beth. I think in the olden days lavender was an offical mourning color so it was most appropriate. The sentiment was even greater! What a good friend you are!

Love the shot of Sugarwings holding one. Here’s sending up some prayers that your surgery goes well and never again will sounds louder than a chainsaw be heard inside your home! 9. Sure…all the celebrities blame their facelifts and nosejobs on snoring…hehehe! Just kidding! I hope all goes well and you get back to your puppies soon!

  10. such a beautiful and thoughtful arrangement…something personal always has much more meaning than store bought.
glad everyone survived the tree trimming and there was no blowing out of fuses, or anything else!
take care of yourself, I’m not sure exactly what it is that they ‘snip’ to cure snoring but I hope it works. I just may have to look into that myself~~gosh, I am loud! I wake myself up. See you soon…

  11. How adorable is that picture of the wee one holding the puppy….soooo sweet!
Karla, my husband is the same way with the snoring. I usually end up leaving the bedroom because it keeps me awake. He is seeing a doctor about this in two weeks so let me know how everything went. Take care of yourself.

  12. Karla,
Oh Karla, that tribute to Beth’s Grandmother is beautiful. I love the idea of a keepsake like that rather than flowers that cost a fortune & just get tossed out. I look at the picture of Sugarwings holding the pup & I think the one growing is your sweet girl. She suddenly looks so grown up. Such a big girl now, is she 4 like mine? Will she go to kindergarden next year? I hope your surgery goes well, & your up hosting tea parties soon! Lisa

  13. Karla, I really like the the arrangement you made for Beth. It is so cute. Love the puppy pics, and I always keep an outlook for the parti pup. Good luck with the surgery.

  14. Glad hubby is okay! What a touching sentiment for Beth; it is really lovely!
I hope your surgery goes well; that you are in and out and home soon! Adenoids, maybe?!

  15. the puppies are so sweet Karla…the picture of Sugarwings bestowing a kiss on one is just precious…what a lovely and thoughtful gift you made for Beth, i bet she really appreciated that…you are a good friend!!!

  16. Sugarwings and the puppy look just darling together!…so sweet.
The jar arrangement you made for Beth is so lovely and thoughtful…she must have loved it.
I didn’t know there was a minor surgery to correct snoring. I may have to ask my Dr. if that would work in my case. It would be nice to get rid it, that’s for sure…then my boys would have to stop their merciless teasing. 🙂 hee-hee
I hope your surgery goes well, feel better soon.

  17. Dear Karla,
I have heard that sinus surgery isn’t a lot of fun. Hope yours isn’t the one I have heard about and, if it is, have some of those meds they give you.
The tribute to Beth’s grandmother is unbelievably touching. And beautiful as well. That is really a thoughtful thing to do. I got three of those jars at Goodwill yesterday and will remember to try something lovely and personal like that.
Those pups are soooo cute…I want one!! Sugarwings looks like she is doing a pretty good job with them but I do see Beth’s hand in there, offering support. I didn’t realize Mary of the wonderful Artist Class was part of your craft group…cool!
    Take it easy, Parcheesi!
    Suz

  21. What a cute pic of Sugarwings and the puppy! I also thought that was a charming and thoughtful gift you made for your friend. Hope your surgery goes well and you heal quickly~ relax and baby yourself a little…

  22. Awwwww, Twinkles is such a good mama. You must be proud of her.
The floral arrangement you made is so lovely. If I were Beth, I would be tempted to fill it with dried Lavender or roses and keep it as is when the Lilacs die.
Good Luck with the surgery. I’ll keep you in my thoughts.

  23. Karlaa…you are a brave woman indeed…I too have a snorer that needs to be snipped, but I am still pretending that the train rambling through the house isn’t me :)…yes, I am a chicken, but there is also that little nonsense about paying the bill :)…
Love all the puppies, way cute 🙂 And I am a pansy and lilac fan, so this post was especially delightful to me. I think the remembrance jar you did for Beth is so special….what a lovely thoughtful thing to do, I love the promise of the personal touch when our loved ones go Home 🙂
Rest well after your surgery and get some sleep 🙂

  24. I hope your surgery goes well, Karla. Will be thinking of you. p.s. the gift you made Beth for the passing of her grandmother is so beautiful and thoughtful – what a wonderful idea!

  25. Karla, when you are up to it, please tell me all about your sugery. I snore like a gorilla and have to sleep with a cpap. I would love to learn a way to stop sleeping with the “alien suprise” on my face. I will be sure to say a prayer for your quick recovery. God Bless!!
    Laraine

  26. By the time you read this comment your surgery will be done and over with. Fast in and fast out these days. Amazing what they can do.
I thought your tribute to Beth’s grandmother was such a beautiful thing. I was thinking you could use artificial flowers if you wanted to mail it to a person. Must start looking for some large mouth jars. When flowers are all wilted and dead they would still have your tribute and it shows you care by taking the time to make something.
    Extra hugs to you
    FredaB

  27. The pretty book you have made is so wonderful. and I love the speial jar you made for your friend. Good luck with your recovery with Sugarwngs… Movie night sounds like fun.

  28. The kiddy pool really is a great idea for the puppies to run around in. Think Sugarwings will help keep them in… or help them escape?
Glad that the chainsaw work went safely. Prayers now that YOU recover from your surgery quickly. * HUGS *

  29. That tribute to Beth’s grandmother was wonderful, and I know she loved it (saw it on her blog!) That was so sweet. I love the idea of puppies in a pool – easy to clean – I wish I’d heard of that when my pal’s puppies were tiny! So much fun! The glass shard necklace is lovely –

  30. Hi Karla!
I just got back from a week in San Diego, and first thing I did this morning was check in on “The Life and Times of Karla Nathan”! 😉
I am so impressed by your thoughtfulness to your friend whose lost her grandmother. Such a sweet and simple gesture that spoke volumes to the recipient, I’m sure!
What a blessing you are in people’s lives!
