Re-Do Day

Punkinpatch09 041

Yesterday was Re-Do Day.  I started with the white lady and Frenchied her up with the 1921 magazine that Zita sent to me. I saw a title on one page that said
"Le Sphinx Blanc" and used it on the front, and added a white rose underneath that.

Now, I dont' speak French, but was guessing it meant the white Sphinx?  It seemed to fit her mysterious aura.  Unless of course, that isn't what it means.  I could be WAY off. But in my mind, that is her name now. "Sphinxy"

Hmm, does anyone else think that half circle shape on her neck looks like a hicky?
  I didn't notice that before…

While in heavy duty re-do mode, I brought an accumulation of dark things outside to paint. I used my Lazy Woman style of painting, spraying with primer, glazing, then top coating with spray poly. (instructions on the side bar)

(Sphinxy got a coat of poly over her decopauge too)

When I saw this old clock, I was swept off my feet! My sister-in-law was the first to find it on our shopping trip to Rusty Chandelier.  The tension of waiting till she made up her mind on whether she was buying it or not made me twitch with desire to rip it out of her hands instead of standing next to her pleasantly and politely while she pondered her purchase.

Its not easy to be a nice person sometimes.  But, my theory is, that there is a lot of junk out in the world and there is no reason to be grabby and mean about any of it. No matter how drop dead gorgeous it is, and no matter how much I think it is destined to be mine.

Well, she passed, so I picked it up and told her I'd buy it if she didn't but if she changed her mind, it would be OK.  I was lying through my teeth about the OK part, but would have made myself believe it was really OK, if I absolutely had to and she changed her mind.

I wanted to use it as a frame for a photo of my fairy grand baby, but when I got it home, realized that the clockworks were not coming out very easily, plus it was a nice clock, an 8 day wind up.

But even though the clock itself was cool, I wanted it to be a softer look for my house, so I covered the clock face with white and cream flocked wallpaper to match the paint job I did on the frame.

Punkinpatch09 037

See why I wanted it so badly? Its ideal for this spot. Plus, did I  mention it was only $26, and really quick to redo?

Punkinpatch09 042

Both of the statues got the same paint technique, white primer with cream glaze. I added another glaze coat of sage green over that.

The (pink satin lined) suitcase from the Rusty Chandelier gold mine shopping trip was a really easy redo, too. I just covered up a black and orange picture on the lid. (why? why? What made the manufacturer put orange and black on the cover when the interior was a perfect pink???)

I cut out a piece of pretty flocked paper to fit, glued it down, and used my paint can opener to pry up the rubber edges of the suitcase trim to tuck the wallpaper under.  It looks like it has always been there!

The glass door cabinet was spray primed, then painted with a bisque colored paint that was left over from another project. After that, I distressed it with some sandpaper. I'm trying to decide on whether I have the patience to redo the interior… but I didn't get it done yesterday and now Re-Do day is over.

Getting back to something is not easy. I try to finish a project immediately before I switch gears to something else.   And after doing all these things, plus a few others yesterday, I have to say, I am ready to move on.

Won't Sphinxy look great next to this hand covered in French ephemera?  I'm excited about my displays for upcoming shows now!

Here is some more of my loot from our shopping trip to St. Joe, MO.  My hat whispering skills were in fine form that day.

After cleaning up all my  Re-Do Day mess, Sugarwings helped me make dinner.  I cut up an eggplant, then gave her the "stump" of it, with the stem "handle" to use as a stamp.

Punkinpatch09 033

We used a butterfly shaped cookie cutter to made a design in the eggplant for her and she inked up her stamp with a washable marker instead of getting eggplant all over one of my stamp pads.

And how do you get a 3 year old to yell, "Yippee!" when they see eggplant at dinner?  We cut the slices out with her butterfly shape before frying them and serving them over the top of penne pasta with lots of cheese.

  1. Wow! Your vision for that clock was incredible! Great job! I know exactly what you mean about finishing a project as soon as you get it home. If I don’t tackle it immeadiately, I forget all about it and it gathers cobwebs in the garage…argh!

  2. How about decoupaging the picture over the face of the clock? That is, if you change your mind about using it as a clock. Love all your finds. I’ve seen that size suitcase used as a dogbed. The top is fixed to be permanently open and a cushion is placed itside. Ball feet on the bottom.

  3. Naw, doesn’t look like a hickey at all! lol
I am in Portland and going to have dinner with Michelle Geller tomorrow night…so excited. I’ll bet you know her!
I am off to check out your store, Karla, for some fun glitz! Love your work and your tutorials…you share well with others…heehee!
    Hugs,
    Suz

  4. Karla, all of your re~dos are fabulous…but i am dying over the suitcase…oh WOW!!! it really looks gorgeous now!!! you and your paint cans are SO inspiring!!!

  5. Things making me happy in this post: That amazing bust in the top photo, that AMAZING mirror cabinet, and that AMAZINGEST eggplant idea and the little girl loving it! LOL!

  6. Cookie cutters are a lifeline for my picky 4 year old eater. He literally will not eat any veggies and fruit in their natural form. But give him a few cookie cutters and he will eat them up because “I made them!” Works like a charm everytime!
I am looking forward to next weekend. I have a antiquing trip all planned out, from Weston to St. Joe. Its going to be a blast!

  7. Hey Karla your art projects are inspiring..I`m going to get right at some stuff I`ve been putting off..thanx Lorraine

    the clock and Sphinxy.
Your eggplant dinner is making me hungry!!
I’m sure Sugarwings really enjoyed the
    butterfly shape.
    Thank you again Karla.
    Many Hugs,

  9. Karla I could just see you in that store waiting patiently while your sister in law made up her mind! That clock is beautiful!
I remember you saying one time “there’s enough for everyone” and I’ve tried to repeat that everytime I have the urge to rush in somewhere! It really works!

  10. The story of shopping with your sister-in-law reminded me of Lena’s and my many, many shopping trips We were forever being patient, tapping our foot, waiting for the other to pass on something. Too often “she’d” decide to buy it herself. LOL

  11. I always love your redos so much. I have a new room for my crafty space but I think I need to start with the walls and then I’ll use your technique on the furniture.
    Blessings,
    Christine

  12. ooh, it’s like Christmas coming here. So many gorgeous treats to look at!
Before I forget, I am always stamping Humbug’s food with cookie cutters. Her current favourite is a crown shaped one (she has such good taste!).
Love all of your makeovers. You’ve given me a bit of inspiration, and I’ve just dug out a mirror that I’ve had *forever*. It’s old and dusty, but I’m going to clean it up and paint it this very noon. No idea where it will live afterwards, but at least it will be all ready for when I find a home for it.
    ooh, those hats! Just divine!
Your white lady looks eerily beautiful. You would love our Financial Times newspaper, it’s the one I buy purely for covering things with paper, as it’s a gorgeous faded salmon pink. I used it earlier this year to cover a box for my vintage style decorations. http://cottonrose.blogspot.com/2009/04/christmas-in-april.html
    Have a lovely weekend :o)

  13. Your translation is dead on…it does say “The white Spinx”
Personally, I’d still try to rip out that clock face, or replace it with a larger one… It looks to tiny & plain in the center of such an ornate piece. I’m such a critic huh…sowwy 😛

    Karla :
Wow ! The Sphinxy, sure is divine. I love the clock too, its FABULOUS !
That reminds, me of so many times, I too have waited, and waited for someone to pass up a much coveted treasure. And most times, they would reconsider and put it down. Then I snatched it up. So, I know the feeling well. Don’t we just feel super when that happens ?
The eggplant, looks delish ! Hope to get some of my long put off re-dos, done as well. What would we all do if we did not have projects awaiting us ?
I have so many, its hard to count ! If anyone gets bored, I have plenty projects to share !
    Have a great October !

  15. Just AWESOME Karla!! That clock, what the heck, I never in a million years would have gotten the inspiration for that!!! And Sugarwing’s little butterfly eggplant makes me almost want to eat them too. Almost…..;)
