The Cuppy Cake Song works magic

Playdoh_010 Sugarwings loves her new play dough from Robin! She spent about 3 hours in the studio with me while I worked and I was able to get a lot done, as long as we sang and talked and I sat down to make things with her here and there.

She sculpted play dough for about an hour, then was ready to move on to an hour of markers, then an hour of paint. I was amazed that a 2 year old could be as obsessive about working in the studio as I am! We are definitely related.Playdoh_026

Robin scented and colored the play dough with Kool Aide, so there was a lot of sniffing, and calls for "Mell this one Grammy!"

By the 3rd hour of artwork, she was wearing only a diaper and war paint, with stickers up and down her arms and play dough in her hair. She started out cute though.

We played in the garden hose a while after this.Playdoh_044

While the fairy grand baby worked on her crafts, I redid Lou Wanda and Lucinda.

They’ve been with me forever, used as jewelry displays. I’ve tried to use them for blog photos, but they are so dark, it never works well.Playdoh_045

So, I decided to go for a lighter, brighter look, but wanted to keep their feet as is, I had painted flowers on them years ago and still like that part.Playdoh_062

This is a remnant of a favorite fabric of mine, it was the last little bit left, but not quite enough. So I decided to do a crazy quilt look, with different shaped patches cut out and glued down. I left frayed edges showing, and was happy with the look.

I’d cut a piece of fabric, then glue it on and trim off the excess, till I filled in the whole form.Playdoh_063

Then, I lightly sanded the black knob on top and painted it shell pink with crackles, added vintage beaded trim and a millinery flower.Studio_clean_up_073

Now, Lou Wanda is dressed in that prom dress I couldn’t zip up. And seeing it on her, I understand why!!

Yes, that is a dog sitting on my dining table, but actually, the table is for work, not food.

And yes, that is an extremely thick layer of filth on that mirror on the wall. I just bought it for $2 and it needs cleaned up and repainted. Its on the wall now to get it up off the floor and out of my way.Studio_clean_up_074

Of course, not a lot of the fabulous fabric shows while Lou Wanda is wearing the prom gown, but she won’t always be dressed, so I am glad I covered all of her up.Playdoh_058

Lucinda got the same treatment, but with an assortment of creamy upholstery fabrics left over from a slip cover project.Playdoh_067

She also has some cut up doilies stuck to her and a spray of old, perfectly smooshy velvet leaves.Playdoh_066_2

I dressed her in an old half slip.

I’m still shocked that Sugarwings worked on her projects the whole time I worked on mine.  I have to thank Jennifer Hayslip for some help, she has a song playing on her blog right now, that the baby loves. We looked it up on line and played it over and over and over for hours.

And I still can’t get the words right. I am hopeless at learning lyrics.  I always end up making up my own.Wallpaper_books_051

After Sugarwings went home, singing her own version of the Cuppy Cake Song, I made up a few wallpaper journals and packed up tidbits to sell along with them for the new owners use to for embellishments.

Jenny Doh might be interested in them for Somerset Life, but of course, that is never official until she sees them in person and makes up her mind then.  Some things they use, others they send back.  I certainly don’t take it for granted that they will be used, and I also don’t get hurt or sad when things are not accepted.

I’ve juried art shows and craft shows myself and understand the process.  "Not accepted" rarely means "REJECTED", in the negative sense. It just means, "not what we were looking for this time".

Studio_clean_up_075 But I did get some good news! My studio will be in a future issue of "Where Women Create"! This is a new magazine coming out from Somerset (don’t they have the most diverse and interesting selection of publications?) based on the book  by Jo Packham

So, I decided to do something about my seating in the studio. I found a cheapo computer chair and slipped a cover over it and tied a rose from Holly to it.

Who knew that a slipcover meant for  a dining chair would work??? I had one (from a garage sale) in my linen closet and thought it was worth a try, and hey, perfect fit and length, I don’t roll over the hem at all.

And it is so comfy.  I used to have just a hard backed chair from a garage sale to sit on, and if I sat there  too long, my legs fell asleep.Playdoh_048

While Sugarwings crafted, I not only covered the two dress forms and spiffed up my chair, I also got this gift wrapped up. It is the 1950s House Wife Kit for my August giveaway, already to be mailed to you.  Well, to one of you.  Just leave a comment and it might be YOU.

Tomorrow I am going to Sparks and White Cloud with my BFF Beth to shop at our favorite Flea Market.  Maybe I’ll pick up something there for September’s giveaway.6a00d8341c090953ef00e553f9f02188345

Before I leave for the day, I hope to post something for this event, a tribute to Tasha Tudor.

Check out Clarice’s site for info.

I’d like to paint a little tribute to Miss Tudor, since I am supposed to have my paints out to work on another project. Man, my days are not long enough…..

  1. I used to make playdough for my children when they were small. All of your creations are beaututiful. I wished I had your creative genius…..Hugs….m.

  2. Love the way the manniquins…. I mean Lucinda and Lou Wanda, turned out. I think I recognize the whiteish fabric from your sofa slipcover?! Sugarwings is adorable and it is so cute that she was involved in her crafts! She will turn out to be just as creative and artistic as her Gramma!

  3. Oh, I adore how you did Lucinda up! And how exciting – all the Somerset stuff you have going on. I don’t think I’m Somerset material – too hodgepodgy =) Blessings… Polly

  4. What a delightful day you had! You are lucky to have 2 mannequins. I especially like the one done in ivory upholstery. Kisses to the baby.

  5. LOVE the makeover for the two ‘girls’….I’m still shopping for one.
I must find that recipe for that playdoh, my grandprincess would love it.

  6. Your dress forms are just lovely!!! How fun to have a little one to keep you company while you create…especially one so sweet as her and she loves to create too!
    Have a wonderful day!

  7. Lou Wanda and Lucinda both look fabulous!!
And I am impressed with Sugarwings’ attention span; my boys were rarely occupied with one thing for more than a few minutes!
    🙂

  8. It sounds like a great day! Sugarwings is lucky to be exposed to arts and crafts so young. She’s quite the protege! I can’t wait to see that Somerset book, too.

  9. Congrats to you! Your studio is lovely and will look wonderful among the pages of Where Women Create! My little one is finally getting interested in coloring and painting and spent almost two hours painting my hand-drawn pictures of Wall-E with water colors. By the time he was done his arms and tummy where painted too and when he rinsed off in the bath, the water was a nice dirty brown! I love seeing kids create and hope Sugarwings will always have that artistic streak.

  10. Sugarwings looks like she is having fun playing with and smelling her playdough…how CUTE!!! she sounds like such a good girl Karla:) i love the makeovers you gave your girls, they look very pretty!!! congrats again on getting in that magazine…don’t forget to put in a good word for me and mr madison…LOL!!!

  11. I can’t wait to see your room in the magazine, how cool. I love that Sugarwings mells things also, my one son melled too. LOL Ok, I have a question I need answered. How many Yorkies do you have? I’m a dog lover, we lost our mini dachshund 4 years ago at 13. We have since adopted my mutt pack of 3 off of the streets of our city. I do plan someday to go back to little ones though. Have a great weekend.

  12. What a good job you did on Lou Wanda. They are beautiful. A big Congratulations to Mrs. Creativity and the feature of your “creative” space. I will look forward to seeing that article too. Sugarwings makes a good crafting buddy. You could tell she was having a ball with you.
    You have a great evening.

  13. Sugarwings is so cute and love that she plays in your studio with you! Love the redo of your girls! They turned out great! I have been thinking of redoing my dress form and I think you might have inspired me to do that soon!

  14. What a grand day! You know, you are building memory blocks, one by one for Ms. Sugarwings. I know — I spent a lot of days with my grandma, and that’s where my baking love (and training) began. She’s getting the same thing, but with play dough and markers! Lucinda and LouWanda turned out awfully well. Very nice indeed!

  15. Lisa Dear, You are a terrific homemaker and proud to be one. Good for you and all those who share

Granddaughters are wonderful fun. I enjoy mine so much and miss them when they are grown up.

  16. My granddaughters are my joy and I love playing games with them. One of my grandaughters is so funny. She makes up games as she goes along. She is four. I have eight all together ages 1-19. Thank you for sharing yours with us.

  17. I love Lou Wanda and Lucinda’s new look. I want a vintage dress form so badly! Sugar Wings playing with the playdough reminds me that I need to make some for my 4-year-olds at school. First I have to buy some Kool-Aid!
    Blessings,
    Lorilee

  18. Oh that picture makes me so happy! I just melted! I called my WHOLE family over to see! She is adorable! I can just hear her saying “mell this!” I TOLD you she would stay busy forever! Good thing you mixed up the activity with markers and paints too! Love the makeovers! I want to jazz up my dress form too….one of these days!

  19. I love all of those mannequins, I have been looking for one recently. Thee are lovely, but your studio always looks like fun. Congratulations on being in the new magazine. I love the idea, I have the book and I can’t wait to see all the studios in the magazine. Karen

  20. First off, I want to tell you that Sugarwings has a remarkable attention span for a two year old. Believe me I know. I’m around lots of three and four year olds everyday.
I love what you did with the dress forms. What kind of glue did you use to glue on the fabric. The lace around the neck of the second form is beautiful. You get the best stuff in the midwest. I’m jealous!
I want to make a cake stand and was wondering what kind of glue you would advise that I use. I would be gluing a plate to a glass candle stick.

  21. Good Morning Dear Karla! The photo of SugarWings is remarkable, she looks like a little girl, rather than the baby girl we know. You should have posted a later photo! It’s funny how fast the changes happen. The Baby (I still call her that) will be 33 in a week, I still remember playing with her like you do with SugarWings. PlayDoh was the best!

  22. I think Sugarwings has the right idea. If we all ended up in our panties, with paint and stickers on we might accomplish some creativity too.lol.
I have made the kool-aid playdough in the past. It is wonderful. I love to mell it too.
Lou Wanda and Lucinda’s makeovers are fabulous. The prom dress does look perfect on Lou Wanda. I’m glad you did not paint over your original floral painting.
Congrats on your Somerset selection. I have tried giving magazines for a while. But I just cannot quit their publications. I can’t wait to see your “spread”. Of course “we” have already seen all the best shots already.

  23. Playdough kept her that busy that you got so much done? wow! Great for you. Your dress froms are so cute I hope to find a great one one day hopefully this weekend. Hugs Grace

  24. There is something about playdough….it keeps Bethany busy for hours too! I love how you decorated your manniquins they are perfect! Glad to see you got some things done I have not. 🙂

  25. Karla,
You have been a busy productive women! I just think it’s FABULOUS that sugarwings love to create in the studio with you. So special! Your dress forms are GORGEOUS, and Im SUPER THRILLED that your studio is going to be featured. Why wouldn’t it?? It’s an AMAZING and INSPIRING room full of the most WONDERFUL lovelies and pretties! Glad you enjoyed the cupcake song. I swear I cant get it out of my head! LOL!!! XOXO

  26. I’m excited about you being featured in the new publication. Be sure to let us know when it is released.
I love the prom dress – it looks great!

  27. Oh my! So much beauty in one post! You are so clever- I love all the pretties. Your new desk chair is pure genius! I sure hope you pick my name for the giveaway- I can only imagine how awesome it is.

  28. I get a kick out of your escapades with Sugarwings. I feel like I know her. I taught 3-6 year olds for alot of years – I know how they think!! I’m watching my own fairy grandbaby today since her babysitter is without water – we will cut, draw, read, water plants, find frogs, and lots of other stuff – then there’s the blessed nap time!! Thanks for your blogs – I love reading them. PAM

  29. Hi Karla! My very first time visiting your blog and I love it! Tasha Tudor is one of my favorite artists and your tribute is so sweet. I love the way you dressed up your ladies (dress forms). I would love to add you to my blog, with your permission. Take care and keep up all the great work and congrats on being in the new book!

  30. Hi Karla…
I love your dress forms…and I have a question. Are you dress forms hard and solid or soft and supple? Mine is made of a foam rubber, covered in a tight fitting garment. Just curious.
