The Hat Whisperer (or the crazy lady, you decide)

Millinery_259 Do you ever come to my blog and think to yourself, "oh no, more flowers"  Or, "That Karla must be crazy. Why does she keep buying old smashed flowers, almost daily, and then showing them to us?" "What is wrong with that woman?"

Millinery_246

I do tend to fixate on things and make or buy TONS when I am on a roll.

Right now, I can’t seem to stop buying hats (and the flowers that bloom on them).  I am developing some sort of millinery ESP, where I am going about my business,  and out of the blue, I hear them call out to me.  I stop everything, and drive myself, in a dazed state to the store I feel the bonnets beckoning to me from.  Then, I walk right up to the hiding place of a floral bargain bonanza.Millinery_250

Of course, if I happen to come across a pile of rhinestone buttons for $1,  cabinet cards for 50 cents each, or rose postcards for 75 cents each, I am not too deep into my millinery stupor to scoop those up too.Millinery_260

After a day of running errands and playing with Sugarwings, I sat down to make another bracelet and get some work done for my much neglected inventory for the upcoming art show.Millinery_248_3

One bracelet was finished before I started to hear the silk and velvet’s siren song, calling me from Scranton and 4 Corners, (great little antiquing towns about an hour from here). I knew I shouldn’t go, I had a lot of reasons not to go: the stores would  be closing soon, I had work to do, and it was raining so hard I could barely see to drive.

But I also knew that it wouldn’t take long. I didn’t need an all day shopping trip, I could go right to those tempting trinkets, buy them and leave.  They were calling out to me, I had no choice, I knew they were there waiting for me.

I was right!! I bought $3 and $5 hats, plus a BAGFUL of flowers,  for only $10.

Do I look crazy?  Or simply psychic?  As a matter of fact, I think I hear one now…… yes, there is a $4 hat in Leesburg calling me now. I think I will have to go to visit my husband in Virginia.

I am looking into plane tickets for tomorrow night, so if you don’t hear from me, I am on my way there.

Please continue to leave comments, each one is entered into BOTH giveaways (details in my previous post).  I’ll catch up as soon as I hunt down the source of that mesmerizing sound. The one whispering to me "I’m here… I’m waiting… I’m waiting for you here, with my lovely scrunched petals… you know you want to find me…. "

Oh, and please continue to send your cards for Caroline’s 100th birthday, Ryan will bring in the mail while I am gone and they will be safe.

If I have time, I’ll post from our apartment there.  But I could be pretty busy, hunting down that hat that is calling me  plus I am going to insist that my husband whisk me away to romantic dinners and nights out to celebrate my 50th birthday.  It is only 12 days away, I seriously need to start celebrating. I might start by finding the perfect hat and treating myself to it!

  3. JOY JOY and throwing lots of confetti your way–> –> ~`~“~~` <-- <-- Hope you have an awesome few days with your hubby.

  4. Come on Karla! You know perfectly well that there is no such thing as: too many millinery flowers, too many rhinestones, too many vintage hats, too much vintage wallpaper, too many flower postcards, I could go on, you know, but I only tell you this one; too many blogfriends! I love your posts, always!! Have a nice time with your husband again!

  5. Karla, you kill me…the hat whisperer…LOL!!! i am thinking maybe we should do our “thing” now before your luck dries up and the bounty is gone:) i forgot to ask what makes your heart go pitter patter, what should i be on the look~out for to send you?

  6. I love those hats! You’re on a roll! And it was particularly fun to see you modeling them. Now I know where Sugarwings gets her good looks! 🙂

  7. Oh how I love old hats! I have quite a collection and still have to have that one lonely hat that needs a home! And it’s a special treat when you find millinery flowers. My latest thing is hat pins, I only have a few but love them all.
    Hugs, Sherry

  8. I love 4-corners, too. And when you find that special something, it’s like finding a lost treasure! I dont think you are crazy! I love your old flowery hats, and how you use the flowers in your projects! Have fun on your trip!

  9. If you’re crazy, that would mean I’m crazy, too.
It sounds like you might have missed the memo. Once you hit fifty, birthday celebrations can last up to one month before and one month after the big day. Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate.

  10. Gotta catch up with your blog, and I’ll be back (love the hat!) but I had to write and tell you I have finally absorbed Karla into my working vocabulary! We are having a special event at the station Saturday and I was writing instructions for my student to wrap the goodie bags for the speakers and performers and I told her to “take the star tissue and foof ’em up so they’re all pretty!” (It wasn’t till spell check highlighted “foof” that I really realized that was what I said!!!)

  11. You just keep right on listening to those voices in your head, they haven’t steered you wrong yet! Enjoy your get away and hoping you find much love and even more treasures!

  12. You score the best stuff!!!!! Love to know where you shop b/c here in KC, I can’t find any bargains like those! Have a great trip to DC and enjoy the time w/ the hubby!

  13. You must be blessed! I cant find vintage ilinery tosave my life around here, and those milinery fruits! I love them! Will you share what kind of places you are finding these at?

  14. You just keep listening to those voices – someone has to save those poor flowers from collecting dust in some antique store. You’re practically doing community service. They’re endangered species in this area so by all means, SAVE THE MILLINERY FLOWERS!

  15. I love following your adventures! Especially when you include pictures of your grandbaby! I hope you find a decent flight and have lots of romance to report on soon! Kris

  16. I can not believe your luck with these hats! I need to rub elbows with you or something because I’ve never found ONE! I guess I’m not looking in the right spots! I hope we can do some shopping when you get to Virginia!

  17. Karla, I don’t think you’re the only one that’s crazy, as I know I love seeing pictures of vintage millinery over and over!!! Maybe you could write a “how to” on hat whispering, lol! Have fun in Virginia and I expect to see pics of lots of goodies. (Can you imagine the days when women wore these hats. It must have been a gorgeous site!)

  18. Karla, I know about the “Calling” I seem to hear it ever so often. I can be cleaning the house or just watching TV, then all of a sudden I get up and tell my DH, “I’ll be right back” and off I go.
    Have fun on your trip.
    Hugs:)

  19. Hey Karla! Nope! You’re not the only ‘crazy’ lady to ‘hear’ things ‘calling’ to you! With me it’s bears. We went to a collectables fair recently and were about to walk out after looking at a room full of model cars, trains, planes and other boy stuff, when I told Scott I had to go back – there was a bear that needed to be liberated! Sure enough, there was ONE bear – who came home with me, had a repair and makeover session, is now called Rupert and lives in my spare room! Tee! Hee! Hee! Oh! Loved the key pendant in the previous post – how generous you are to give away ANY of your pretties for YOUR birthday!! See you next visit! Bear Hugs! KRIS (Tag Along Teddies)

  20. Karla, you crack me up! Don’t stop! Your pictures are always lovely and you look fabulous in that hat–actually, it looks more like a crown!
    Have a wonderful trip…hugs!

  21. I’m in love with those beautifully worn repair tags! So neat. And I’m sure there is no such thing as having too many hats or flowers. You can always sell some on Etsy if you can’t walk around your house without stepping on them 🙂 I’m sure we’ll buy them up.

  22. I am spending July in DC/Virginia. I need a full list of places to shop. If I rent the u-haul on the way back I will stop by and bring you goodies!

  23. I think I’m your kind of crazy. Sometimes old items call to me, too, and sometimes new issues of magazines send out the vibe that they’re arrived in the bookstore. I think your grandbaby is very lucky to have all the fun (and pink sparkles) that you provide. You make everything–from turning 50 to playing in a gravel pile–sound fun!

  24. oooh, you hit the jackpot again?! =) lucky you! i can not believe all of the pretties you find and so affordable, gotta love that! i finally had a stroke of luck, although not as good as yours, on a beautiful box full if millinery flowers – yeah! i was a hApPy cAmPer =) debbie

  25. OMGosh! I so know what you are talking about. I thought I was crazy. But I see that there are lots of people with the same illness. The thing that calls me is garage sales on Saturday morning. I think I’m going to sleep in but at 6 am I wake up and they start calling! Karla, I love your blog! Keep showing us your adventures and treasures.

  26. Karla,
I enjoyed your post and I can relate totally. I get in those states that my husband calls obsessed states when I just can’t get enough of something. You look much more sane than I, my recent obsession is with little trees washed up from the ocean. I have been making seascapes like mad. Now do you feel better?
I hope you have a perfectly wonderful 50th birthday!
    -Mya

  27. Have you ever heard of millinery floral envy??? I am having a severe case!! I never find hats for that cheap!! The best we get around here are $10.00…..maybe you will share on the Etsy!!!Your Birthday get away sounded lovely, 50 and fabulous and a fun day with unexpected friends was the best gift of all!!! don’t you just love how it all turns out…the move, the apartment, and now the treats that come with it!!!-Sanddra

  28. Hi Karla, I can’t believe how many flowers you have, I think I’ll need to buy some from you….lol hope you have a fab time with hubby.
Also I’m sad to say I wont be able to finish the Birds and Bonnet swap, as you know I haven’t been well and I go into hospital tomorrow. I only got one panel finished for the swap not all four. So I’m really sorry ladies for letting you down.
    Hugs
    Kirstie.
