What a good year

  Shopping dec08 008

When I'm not feeling productive or creative, a trip to an antique mall usually provides some inspiration.  So, after a bit of shopping, I am feeling the urge to redo something and get moving.

Beth gave me this stack of plastic frames and I have just the project in mind for it.  Today is limited in time, though,Sugarwings is coming here for New Years Eve and I only have till 1pm today to get going on my plan.

So, it might have to wait.

In the last few months, I have developed an interest in busts and statues, so was really happy to find this one while out exploring Kansas City antique malls with Beth yesterday.   Especially after reading the Magnolia Pearl book this week,( cover to cover twice! ) She has them everywhere and likes to play dress up with hers just like I do with mine.  This gal will get a few necklaces to go along with the crown she is sporting.

Not everything in the book was to my taste, too many colors and too dark for me, but the style of putting it together really grabbed me.  The plushness and layers of luxurious finds is what I enjoyed about it, and want to go toward myself. But in lighter colors. With roses, of course!  This bust will get a paint treatment, she is pretty as is,  but I prefer a more light hearted, lighter look.

Another thing that I am hooked on right now is boiled eggs. I can't seem to get enough of them right now, so have been keeping a bowl full in the fridge ready to snack on.   I've never been able to resist  drawing faces onto the shells, so every time I make some, I simply have to give them little personalities.

I'm so glad to finally have a baby girl around who appreciates my little quirks! Sugarwings "gets me" and thinks that of course, eggs should have faces and French toast should always be trimmed with cookie cutters and made into butterflies and flowers. And that chandeliers should have glittering birds tucked into the crystals.  And that dogs need to be sang to.  And that dancing in the kitchen while cooking makes the food better.  Yes,I am so lucky that she has come into my life and I finally have someone who doesn't look at me like I am strange sometimes.

Its wonderful to have a little friend who understands that fairies can make homes in birdcages around the garden.

Zoo 018

And that if you look around, you can see magic everywhere.

Flooded side yard and driveway 034

Of course, there is nothing better than having  a family  member  share my obsession with paint, someone who will spend all day in the studio with me and doesn't think it is an obsession, just a great way to spend time!

Looking back over some of my favorite photos of 2008, makes me so eager to see what fun 2009 has to offer and realize what a lucky year I just had.

Here's to 2009- and wishing all of you fun and happiness in the upcoming year! (and the joy of sharing it with someone who "gets you")

  1. Karla, I hope you have a wonderful New Year’s Eve with Sugarwings! It is so neat to see the special bond that you two share! Enjoy it! Oh…and I don’t think any of that is strange, either, just so you know! LOL!

  2. My oldest thought all toast had to be painted! Let Sugarwings try this. Make paint with about a tablespoon of milk and foodcoloring. (Use quite a bit of foodcoloring) Use q-tips or clean brushes to dab the “paint” onto white bread. Toast it and admire the painting before eating. My pre-K students also love to make painted toast.
    Have a Blessed New Year!

  3. Karla, I love the picture of Sugarwings painting. Grandchildren are the best thing ever. We have two grand-daughters that will spend tonight through Sunday with us. They are 9 and 10, and Grandpa and the girls will create all weekend ( Granny is the adult, darn! but somebody has to be )
Have a great New Years Eve. Many Blessings for the coming year.

  4. Oh Miss Karla!!! I GET YOU!!! You are SO a left brained person like me! hee! hee! The world is a more fascinating better place with quirky people! ;)Im laughing because I TOO am restless and ready to hit the antique malls! Im ready to be inspired! Hmmmmm. maybe that has something to do with my upcomming shoot. hee! hee!
ADORE the photos of Sugarwings. She is a true blessing and keeps you young and on your toes. Just like my babies!

What a joy this blog entry was! It is wonderful when someone truly understands that we occupy a magical space in our own unique “dimension”!! I had to laugh about the painting toast post. My daughter does NOT get me. I picked her up from preschool (18 years ago, now) and the teacher said she refused to paint her toast. My daughter simply could NOT UNDERSTAND why anyone would paint toast?! LOL She’s still the same to this day. I’m dancing in the kitchen with glitter and she’s rolling her eyes reading some political science book. Our differences truly make the world go ’round. Some of us are just more sparkly! Here’s to a sparkling, magical new year to you Karla and your delightful little fairy grand-baby!! – Kathy in Chicago

  10. I’m a kitchen dancer as well, and my dog looks at me like I’m a crazy lady while I’m singing to him. I don’t even sing real songs! I think it all sounds perfectly normal!!
    Happy New Year!

  11. Oh Karla!!! ALL my dogs have had their own personal songs for the past 35 years! That’s getting to be quite a few songs at this point, I really must write them down before dementia sets in and the family will say, “Remember that song Mommie used to sing? How did Thomas’ song go?” (Like they’ll care, but I can dream…) And Of Course one must sing and dance in the kitchen, most esp. when making Christmas cookies or a cake. My kids both ended up being great singers and musicians, and I still say that was part of it. You are So Lucky to have SugarWings to share all the Good Stuff with! Happy New Year!!! Your Friend, Bobbi

  17. Eight days ago…the 23rd at 11:05am there was a knock on the door. I opened it to find your package staring me in the face. With all the snow we had I was bugging the maintenance guy so when it came he dropped it by! Karla, Karla, Karla (cheerleader Chant), in no time at all I had the white opaque strapping tape stuck to whatever surface(I put it into things I make)I could find and pulled out the doll(I don’t collect dolls as a rule but this wee lass spoke to me…she’s been to Alaska now and I’ve named her Paisley…the smudges of glitter on her forehead and on her shoes, and up and down one of her arms). Next I pulled out the tree and it’s sitting with a small card board santa and my old Home Interior trio of elves. I’ll be back to finish where I left off…hubby has us going to the movies. Joy joys Karla

CONGRATULATIONS ! ON THE PUPPIES ! They’re adorable ! I had a feeling they were coming soon, too. Loved the little elf hat making party, you looked so funny in that pic with your apron on and your blouse all covered in paint ! I laughed out loud at my computer ! Those times are priceless, aren’t they ? And your wall covered in vintage wall-paper, is so beautiful !
Well, take care, Happy New Year !
