What do you LOVE about your Home?? And a kitchen evolution.

tImg045 Welcome to the Romantic Country Party!  You are all invited to show or tell us what you LOVE about your home.

If you are a fellow blogger, leave a comment to tell me you have posted pictures or stories about what you LOVE about your own home. I will add links throughout the day Tuesday so we can all visit each of the party sites.

If you are a reader, please share stories of what you LOVE about your home in the comment section too.  I will be drawing  names of a blogger and of a blog-supporter for prizes to be given out on Wednesday.Img053

What do I LOVE about my home?

It makes me smile to have an eclectic mix and a never ending, always changing menagerie of possessions.  To find bargains at thrifts, garage sales, auctions, in dumpsters, places where I can spy a diamond in the rough.

This photo of my gazebo was in Victorian Country a few years ago and you can see from it, that I like to use pieces that go together, but that aren’t matching sets.  Img052

Right now, some rooms from my home are in Romantic Country along with a short article I have written.

Here is the kitchen scanned from the  magazine.

I like to redecorate, but they have gone even further and completely renovated and given me a mirror image of my actual space!  How fun is that??  Perfect for me, I  love changes and with this one, I didn’t have to do a thing!! Img051_2

To give you an idea of some of the changes my kitchen has been through, here are some older magazine shots. These have all been taken by Bill Mathews and styled by Gloria Gale for Harris Publications (Country Victorian and Country Almanac).

Kitchen

This one was taken by Diane Guthrie for a local magazine. She took this after we replaced the original farm house cabinets with new ones my son custom built for us.Kitchen_001

I repainted a bit since then, this is the latest incarnation.Kitchen_002_2

Home_love_014 And from the other angle.

When we remodeled, I saved money by repainting my old fridge to match the cabinets, in the same paint and glaze I used on them (oil based french vanilla color with a mocha glaze)Home_love_010

One small addition to the kitchen was made this weekend, I found a toy stove/fridge for Sugarwings at a garage sale for $1.  Now she can help me fix dinner.

If you are new to my blog, (as I know a lot of the party crowd is), you’ll see I tend to run on and on and my posts can be long winded.

I’m afraid this one will be a record breaker by the time I add all the party invitations to other blogs!

I look forward to visiting each and every one of the listed parties, and hope everyone else enjoys mingling and party hopping too.

I’ll check throughout the day and add links as I receive them.  If you don’t see yourself listed, please email me and let me know I have missed you!

  3. Dear Karla
What do I love about my home? Well, We have only own it for 5 years so were still rebuilding. Mostly i like our bedroom and the hallway, visit my blog and see (not the latest posts though). But the best thing with the house is that its old (19th-century) and very large. The garden is big but could larger 🙂 I grow vegetables and will have hens in a while. The nature around is stunning. Grazing horses, water birds, beavers, deers and the lynx. At our mountain lives bears and elks. There i can pick cranberries, lingonberries and blueberries or just get out for a run. In the winter our kakelowens and our woodstoves gives warmth. Im a continuous reader of your blog Karla but its my first comment. Best regards /linnea-maria from Sweden

Congrats on the photo spread. Your house looks so darling and cozy. Thank you for sharing and hosting…What do I love at my house – the fact that it is cozy and lived in an reflects my personality without being too “girly or romantic” for the 4 other males living in it….Have fun today!!

  14. hello, finally my turn on the computer! sorry slow at getting to the party! Iwill go post my pictures… i love your muted colors and the contrast of materials you have! A lush view of lots of eye candies everywhere ”artful clutter” my husband calls it..hehe.A wonderful home for grandbabies to visit!!

  15. Beautiful pictures! I love that our house is not new (about 75 years old) and has lots of personality. I love that it is filled with books and art (my favorite things to find in a home) and that each room is a different color, thanks to my patient husband who is always willing to paint!
    Susan

  16. Hi Karla, I followed the link from Daisy Cottage to your party. What an awesome idea!! I am new to blogging and I just discovered all of these awesome cottage style decorating blogs about 6 months of so ago. I am amazed at how beautiful each and every one of you have your homes decorated. Even the mom’s with small children! That amazes me. when my children were small I just didn’t have the time, energy or money to really decorate the way I would have liked to. So now that my children are grown I am really enjoying doing the things that I enjoy. I wish I could post pics of my home but we are renovating right now and the place is a mess. But I am having a great time visiting all of the blogs listed here today! Thanks for throwing a great party!:)

  24. Hi Karla,
What a wonderfull party! Love your little gazebo… how I would love to sit there and drink some tea!!! Unfortunately I’ve been swamped with homework since the beginning of september so I have’nt been visiting as often as I would like but I’m really enjoying the party! Have fun!

  25. No blog (yet)…
What I love about my home –
First – the family that’s in it.
Second – Hardwood floor in the kitchen…..
Third – a few good antiques, and a lot of some-day antiques.
    Fourth – Books!!!!!
Fifth – a wonderful chair to curl up in with a cup of tea or coffee.
Sixth – a fireplace (yes, even in Florida)
Seventh – Big, fluffy, comfy sleigh bed.
Eighth – My 800+ piece Fiesta collection.
Ninth – a great big table to craft on.
Tenth – that it’s in Florida, so that means I’m back “home”…
And, an extra – an office with a PC to use for visiting near and far friends.
    MimiG

  26. This is such a wonderful idea! Thank you so much for this inspiration. I’ve written a post today and linked it to your blog.
There are a myriad number of reasons I love my home but the most important one is that it celebrates the love my husband and I feel for each other. We have chosen to decorate our home with the things we make ourselves. Whether it’s his photography or my paintings or other artistic endeavors, our walls celebrate our life together in a home that makes us feel safe and secure.

  27. Karla, I didn’t get in on the festivities but I sure love my little cottage!!!!
What I love most is my big front porch, my centralized kitchen, redone 2 years ago, and the fact that even though I only have a little over 1200 square feet, I have a Living room and a Family room.
I love your home and am especially excited to get the new Romantic Country magazine!
    Have a fun day, everyone!!!!!!

  28. WOW Karla I can’t wait to see you in the Magazine!! I adore your corner cabinet! I have a childrens secretary desk next to my kitchen counter but looking to replace it… and your corner unit gives me inspiration!!! I love that you painted the refridgerator! We have a Unique Lovely Home that used to be a Granny Flat for the Owners of the Property years ago….Then they split it and over several home owners this home has undergone several litttle remodels. Each owner giving thier unique spin….my longwindedness is that the once Kitchen is our Heart of home Loved Ones entrance/Laundry room/Art&Design supplies/Dog care central and exit to the back yard ..and into the house 3 doors…We just got it tiled in a terracota porcelain…And now I am ready to paint I want it to look like A Victorian Conservancy/Garden room….I have bought some Hammmered Paint for the white washer/dryer set….Now I know if that doesn’t work I can use oil paint!!! Yeah I am gaining more inspiration from all these lovely blogging people… Thank you for inviting me. I am about to have a cuppa tea….
Here are some of my Loves from my home posted on my flickr photo stream

  31. Your kitchen has inspired me. Our countertops are very similar. I resisted granite, thinking my cozy, cottagey kitchen would be gone forever, but you did it! I need to go back and rethink.
I didn’t think I could find any picture worthy things to post, but managed to find a few things I could edit out the mess and clutter around. Will we EVER get through with this remodel???
    Having fun at the party!

  32. Karla,
From what I can see, you have hit a happy nerve with everyone. We all seem to love our homes. This was such a good idea, and it made me realize even more how some must feel when their homes have been taken from them (weather disasters, etc.). Not that I didn’t feel for them before, but I will be forever more empathetic about people and their homes now. Keep the good ideas coming and Thank you. Susan

  33. what i LOVE about my home is that inspite of the fact that we’ve been living without a kitchen since last november & the chaos that it’s caused (yes–you read that correctly LOL)…is that my two fur babies, my hubby & myself still find comfortable places to snuggle up in!!!

  34. This is my first ever blog party. Love it, love it, love it. I’m browsing around all these beautiful homes including yours. Thanks for hosting this. I just pick up Romantic Country and loved your article. Can’t wait to meet you at Silver Bella.
    Sharon

  35. Oh, this is my first time here and I LOVE your party idea! I am so excited to see everyone’s homes! You are all definitely invited to stop by, but I haven’t yet posted an official party welcome, since I am finding out about this late in the day.
However, if you get there before I can officially post something, you click on the blog topic “MY HOME” you will see some of the things I love about my home. I’ve shared quite a few photos of that sort of thing, including a whole slide show.
The thing I love the most about it is my kitchen. Just having it completed is a dream come true, having gone without a working one for two years! You’ll see lots of photos of it, plus before & afters on my blog!
You are all welcome to stop in anytime, my door is always open!

  46. hey karla – i am new to your blog, found you through another and here i am! glad i followed the trail of lovely homes to find yours. what a great idea, as we all love to share our homes and our treasures with friends. xo

  47. Hi Karla! I have just discovered the treasure that is your blog! I few of my favourite blogs were linking to your country party today, so I of course had to check things out! I’m so happy I did! You have a gorgeous home and a beautiful blog! I hope you don’t mind that I have invited myself along to your party today and posted about it on my blog too. I hope you’ll pop by one day! Amanda (aka Cottage Contessa)

  48. I usually don’t comment on a blog that has a lot of comments already, but I have been visiting my friends blogs and they all have referred back to this one. What a brilliant idea.
I hope you do this again around Christmas. I think it would be lovely to see the spirit of the season throught people’s homes (plus I can participate then) 🙂

  49. What a fun party this has been! Thank you, Karla, for hosting it! Lots of wonderful inspiration here.
What I love most about my home are the people who live in it. It’s “lived in”, comfortable, and welcoming, but most of all, it’s the place where we love to be most.

  50. My home is on a hill over looking the Southern California high desert. We have a fabulous view during the day and it is enchanting, at night, when the lights of the town come on. I do not have extensive formal landscaping, since I am surrounded by live oak, manzanita, and junipers.
This summer we added on a new deck and a porch that is 12 feet deep and 40 feet long.
    It is fabulous!
We always receive comments about how comfortable our home feels. It is decorated with antique furniture and Native American pottery and baskets that we have collected over the last 34 years of our marriage, as well as, things we have collected on our travels to Egypt, France, Israel, and Central/South America. For me, my home is a perfect eclectic mix.
I love that my home is a quiet, peaceful haven from the otheside world.

  57. I’m late, I’m late, for this very important date!!!! Just found out about this great party so I’m adding a quick post on my blog ACROSS THE POND. Off to look at all the other wonderful places now.
Thanks for this great idea Karla.

  58. I am inbetween homes now and back living with my parents in the house I lived from I was 9 until I moved out when I was 18.
What I love about it is that it is built in wood. It has three parts connected together; one part that is more than 200 years old, one part that is about 100 years old and one part that is about 20 years old. I love the oldest part the most. Its a old wodden cottage. My parents have a minature libary in there now and it has so much charm. There is a small brick wall and you can still see the remains of an old kitchen. Once a shoemaker and his 7 children lived in this small cottage and the attic attached to it. I don’t understand how they all fit in! Also when my father was a kid they rented it out to a Russian painter. He made so much art in there. His Norwegian girlfriend, who often visited, was later arrested for being a spy for Russia. Totally unknown to the painter, I think they had broken up by then. I love that the cottage has so much stories to tell!
I also love the garden we have. Its full of fruit bushes and trees in the summer, as well as loads of flowers due to my fathers great gardening skills. In the winter its covered in snow.
In the winter I love the view from the dinning room. It goes all the way to Oslo. Its stunning.
And even though a lot of my stuff is packed in boxes I love what nots packed away. My favorite polar bear teddy and my other stuffed animals. The paintings I own and other art. My chair in the shower so I can shower without help even when I am very ill. And the chair in the kitchen that makes it possible for me too make food once in a while. All my music. All my bar equipment and small bamboo bar. All my books. And all my polar bear stuff (which is quiet a lot). I love my wall full of purses (collect that too). I am lucky to own all of it. I have a lot of colours in my room and in our house and it makes me happy.
I love my home for feeling safe. Its not where I want to live now, as I prefer living on my own and not with my parents, even though I love them. But its certainly a place I would love to live in the future. And maybe that is what I love most of all.

  59. I wrote a long comment about the things I love and then my computer chrased! I’ll try again although I think I’m way too late now:/ Since I copy pasted what I wrote and it somehow got saved here is what I wrote once again:

  60. Karla, I missed the party yesterday. It was a great idea and I’m enjoying seeing everyone’s participation. It was fun to see your kitchen transitions. I always like skirted sinks and the way the fabrics can be changed out. Congratulations on the RC publication. I am still trying to hunt down the new edition in my little town.

  61. Your kitchen is dreamy! I like the fabric curtain under the sink also the chocolate brown on the walls in one of the pics. I’ve been considering that color for a room in my house.
Come on over to my home and visit for a while.

  62. Oh how I wish I had time to participate! Your home is gorgeous and I’ve checked out a few of the links you provided and WOW! beautiful spaces and fabulous ideas.
Have a wonderful day and I’m hoping to get around to check more of those links out this weekend.
    Blessings,
    Sandy 🙂

  65. Your home is so romantic! I also do love vintage furnutur. have some very old buffet drawers…My grandmother left me some very old dresses! i leave tehm on those drawers! They are so cute!
It’s nice to have a place to feel home and to say it is home!

  66. Hello Karla, I just discovered your blog and love what you are doing. I recently opened a lovely tea room and gift shop which seems to be my home right now! The decor of my tea room was inspired by the era of the building in which we are located, 1919. I have scoured every thrift shop, Goodwill, Salvation Army, garage sale and estate sale to find furniture and accessories to transform and create a warm inviting atmosphere. The nicest thing I like about my “tea room home” is to be abe to share my treasures with so many others who visit us, then to hear the positive comments from my guests. Please visit my website http://www.CamelliaRose.com if you would like to see my home. Blessings to all, Ellen

  67. What fun I have had just looking at all of the photos & keeping up with your whirlwind life! My day is not complete if I haven’t checked in to see what’s going on in KS. Those of us that are not artists live vicariously through you & your art! Keep it coming. Congrats on the publications!!

  68. I also love your home. They is just so much creativity all throughout it. I’m hoping that sometime you can show us a full tour of your home. I want to see all the dish ornaments you have.
